The nip, or the point where the rollers meet, is very important. It prevents the twist from backing up into the roving. This ensures the process remains steady and continuous. Without this precise control, the yarn would not be strong enough for weaving. 
Developing this machine required many different people. Richard Arkwright employed John Kay to build a new machine. Kay had previously worked with an inventor named Thomas Highs. Other local craftsmen, such as Peter Atherton, also helped the team. Because the machine was too large to operate by hand, it needed a new power source. Arkwright first experimented with using horses. He eventually decided to use a water wheel for power. This change gave the machine the name "water frame." 
History shows that the ownership of these ideas was often disputed. In the British Isles, James Kay was initially credited with the invention. However, Philippe Henri de Girard claimed he was the true inventor. Girard was a Frenchman who patented spinning frames for flax. He used both dry and wet spinning methods. His inventions were patented in England in 1815 under the name Horace Hall. Some believe this was a pseudonym to avoid suspicion during the Battle of Waterloo. In 1839, Kay's patent was invalidated because it was too similar to Hall's. 
The impact of the spinning frame on society was enormous. The machine required significant capital to build and run. However, it required very little skill from the workers. This was different from the spinning jenny, which was inexpensive and used in homes. The strong yarn from the frame was used for warp threads. These are the lengthwise threads that bind cloth together. Weaker yarn was used for the weft, or horizontal filler threads. By 1830, the old cottage industry could no longer compete. All spinning moved into large factories.
