Space tourists must train very hard. They use a centrifuge to learn about fast speed. They also fly in special jets to practice floating. Some even use simulators to learn how to fix the ship.
There are different ways to visit space. Some trips go around the Earth. These are called orbital flights. Other trips go just a little way up. We call these suborbital flights. Companies like Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic work on these.
Space tourism is human travel to space for fun. People take these trips to see Earth from above. They also want to feel weightlessness, which means floating in the air. Some tourists want to experience very high speeds. Others want to help with science work while they are in orbit. There are different ways to do this. Some trips are orbital, which means going around the Earth. Other trips are suborbital, which means going just a little way up.
Going to space is a hard job that requires training. Tourists must be in good physical shape. They use a centrifuge to prepare for fast acceleration, also called g-forces. They also fly in high-altitude jet planes to practice floating. This helps them get used to weightlessness. Some people even use simulators to learn how to fix parts of the ship. This training ensures they are ready for the ride.
Space tourism began in April 2001. An American businessman named Dennis Tito was the first space tourist. He traveled in a Soyuz-TM32 spacecraft. Between 2001 and 2009, seven tourists made eight flights to the International Space Station. These trips were helped by a company called Space Adventures. In September 2006, Anousheh Ansari became the first female space tourist. These early trips often cost between 20 and 25 million US dollars.
Many companies are working on new ways to reach space. Blue Origin uses a rocket called New Shepard. It can carry up to six people on a short trip. On July 20, 2021, this rocket reached an altitude of 100 kilometers. Virgin Galactic is another company working on spaceplanes. Their ship, VSS Unity, flew four passengers in July 2021. NASA also wants to allow private astronauts to visit the International Space Station. They plan to use the SpaceX Crew Dragon and the Boeing Starliner.
Space tourism connects to how we explore our world. Long ago, the Soviet space program helped more people become cosmonauts. They even included people from many different countries. In the 1980s, NASA had a program for citizens to fly. Christa McAuliffe was chosen to be the first Teacher in Space in 1985. Although some early programs ended, the dream of space travel continues. Today, people still look toward the stars for new adventures.
Space tourism refers to human space travel conducted for recreational or commercial purposes. Rather than traveling for government research or military goals, these passengers seek unique experiences. Common motivations include viewing the Earth from orbit, experiencing weightlessness, or traveling at extreme speeds. Some participants also use their time in space to contribute to scientific research. There are several distinct categories of space tourism, primarily classified by the altitude and path of the spacecraft. Orbital tourism involves traveling into orbit around the Earth. Suborbital tourism reaches the edge of space but does not complete a full orbit. There is also lunar space tourism, which involves traveling toward or around the Moon.

Preparing for spaceflight requires intense physical and technical training. Tourists must be in excellent physical condition to handle the rigors of launch and reentry. One common training method involves using a centrifuge to prepare for high g-forces. G-forces are the intense feelings of acceleration that push against the body during flight. To prepare for weightlessness, participants often fly in high-altitude jet planes. These planes perform parabolic arcs, which create brief periods of zero gravity. Additionally, travelers may use simulators to learn how to operate or repair spacecraft systems.

The history of commercial spaceflight began in April 2001. American businessman and engineer Dennis Tito became the first space tourist when he traveled aboard a Soyuz-TM32 spacecraft. Between 2001 and 2009, seven different tourists completed eight space flights to the International Space Station (ISS). These missions were facilitated by the American company Space Adventures, working with Roscosmos and RSC Energia. In September 2006, Anousheh Ansari became the first female space tourist. During this early era, the publicized cost for an orbital trip was approximately US$20–25 million per person.

Before the modern era, several programs paved the way for non-professional travelers. The Soviet Intercosmos program allowed cosmonauts from various countries, such as Poland and Vietnam, to fly. In the United States, the Space Shuttle program included payload specialist positions. These roles were often filled by representatives from companies managing specific equipment. In 1983, Ulf Merbold and Byron Lichtenberg became the first payload specialists on mission STS-9. By 1984, Charles D. Walker became the first non-government astronaut, with his employer paying US$40,000 for the flight. NASA also attempted a Space Flight Participant program, which selected teacher Christa McAuliffe in 1985, but the program was cancelled following the Challenger disaster.

Suborbital space tourism is a growing sector driven by private aerospace companies. Scaled Composites won the $10 million X Prize in 2004 with SpaceShipOne. This vehicle was the first private craft to reach an altitude of twice the Kármán Line, which is the boundary of space. Virgin Galactic, a joint venture involving Richard Branson, later developed the SpaceShipTwo class of spaceplanes. Their vehicle, VSS Unity, successfully flew four passengers to an altitude of nearly 90 km in July 2021. Another major player is Blue Origin, which developed the New Shepard system. This reusable rocket carries up to six people on short-duration suborbital flights.

Modern space tourism is becoming more integrated with official space agencies. In 2019, NASA announced plans to allow private astronauts to visit the ISS starting in 2020. These travelers will use the SpaceX Crew Dragon or the Boeing Starliner spacecraft. The estimated cost for these missions is approximately 35,000 USD per day per astronaut, with an estimated 50 million USD for the total round trip. While some projects have faced setbacks, such as SpaceX's cancelled lunar trajectory project in 2024, the industry continues to evolve. The field connects aerospace engineering, private commerce, and international diplomacy as more people look toward the stars.
