A small group of 3.7% speaks a special language called Ladin.

There are 116 different municipalities in the province. Most of these places have a German-speaking majority. Some have a Ladin majority, and a few have an Italian majority.

South Tyrol stays connected to its neighbors through cooperation. It is part of a group called the Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino Euroregion.

This group includes parts of Austria and Italy. They work together to keep peace and help each other. The boundaries of this group are almost like the old historic region of Tyrol.

The history of the region is marked by significant political shifts. Before 1918, South Tyrol was part of the County of Tyrol. This was a territory within the Austrian Empire.

Following the First World War, the area was occupied by Italy and annexed in 1919. During the rise of Italian Fascism, the government attempted a process called Italianization. This involved banning the German language from public service and schools.

They also encouraged people from other parts of Italy to move there. This changed the demographics of the region significantly.

After the Second World War, a new path was found through diplomacy. The Allies decided South Tyrol would stay in Italy, but the German-speaking people needed protection. This led to the Gruber–De Gasperi Agreement in September 1946.

This agreement recognized the rights of the German minority. Later, a 1971 treaty allowed for even greater autonomy. This settlement helped ease the separatist tensions that had existed. Today, the province is a model for how different ethnic groups can live together under one government.

Language is a vital part of the identity in South Tyrol. The population is divided among several linguistic groups. According to the 2024 census, 57.6% of the people use German as their first language.

About 22.6% of the population speaks Italian, mainly in cities like Bolzano and Merano.

Additionally, 3.7% of the people speak Ladin, which is a Rhaeto-Romance language.

Out of 116 municipalities, 102 have a German-speaking majority, eight are Ladin-speaking, and six are Italian-speaking. This variety is visible in the many signs and schools across the land.

South Tyrol also participates in broader international cooperation. It is one of three members of the Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino Euroregion.

This group includes the Austrian state of Tyrol and the Italian province of Trento. The members work together to promote peace and regional cooperation. The boundaries of this Euroregion almost exactly match the historical County of Tyrol. This connection helps the province maintain strong ties with its neighbors despite its official status within Italy.
