Over time, Ossetian groups settled in many different mountain gorges. They lived near rivers like the Great Liakhvi and the Ksani. This movement helped shape the area we see today.

In the 1800s, the Russian Empire began to take control of the region.

This was a special administrative area within the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. The borders were drawn in a very complicated way. Many Georgian villages were included in this new area. This caused many protests from the people living there.

Tensions grew much higher in the late 1980s. As nationalism rose, the two main groups had many disagreements.

In 1990, South Ossetia declared its independence from Georgia. This led to a war between 1991 and 1992. The conflict stayed quiet for a while during the 1990s. However, there were two more big escalations in 2004 and 2008. The 2008 war was a full-scale conflict between Russia and Georgia. After that war, Ossetian and Russian forces gained control of the territory.

Because of these events, the region is very different today. South Ossetia relies heavily on Russia for money and political help.

The political status of this land is a central issue in the Georgian–Ossetian conflict. It also impacts the broader relations between Georgia and Russia. The Georgian government often refers to the area as the Tskhinvali region. They consider it part of the Shida Kartli region of Georgia.

The history of the Ossetian people is linked to the Alans. The Alans were a nomadic Iranian tribe.

In the 8th century, a consolidated Alan kingdom called Alania emerged. This kingdom was located in the northern Caucasus Mountains. Between 1239 and 1277, Alania fell to the Mongol and Timur's armies. These invasions caused massacres of much of the Alanian population. The surviving Alans retreated into the central Caucasus Mountains. They eventually migrated south into the Kingdom of Georgia.

Migration patterns continued through the medieval and early modern periods. In the 17th century, Ossetians moved from the North Caucasus due to pressure from Kabardian princes. Many Ossetian peasants settled in mountainous areas of the South Caucasus. They often lived on lands owned by Georgian feudal lords. The Georgian King of Kartli permitted this immigration. By the end of the 18th century, Ossetian settlements were established in several specific locations. These included the Greater Liakhvi gorge and the Ksani River gorge.

The Russian Empire eventually took control of the region. The Kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti was annexed by Russia in 1801. Ossetians resisted this new administration for several years. The process of annexation began in 1821 and lasted until 1830. By 1830, the area was under complete Russian control.

Following the Russian revolution, the area became part of the Democratic Republic of Georgia. This period saw significant ethnic tension and conflict between Ossetian and Georgian groups.

In April 1922, Soviet authorities established the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast. This was an administrative unit within the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic.

The drawing of these borders was a very complicated process. Many Georgian villages were included in the oblast despite local protests. Even the capital, Tskhinvali, did not have a majority Ossetian population. Tensions rose again in 1989 due to rising nationalism. In 1990, South Ossetia declared independence from the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic. This sparked the 1991–1992 South Ossetia War, which involved Russian participation on the Ossetian side.

The conflict remained frozen during the 1990s but escalated in the 2000s. There were major escalations in 2004 and 2008. The 2008 conflict became the full-scale Russo-Georgian War. During this war, Ossetian and Russian forces gained de facto control of the territory.

Since 2008, Georgia and much of the international community have viewed the area as occupied by the Russian military. South Ossetia now relies heavily on Russia for financial, political, and military aid. This connection remains a major factor in the region's modern political identity.
