Many countries have interests in these islands. Britain and Argentina both claim them. Because of an agreement called the Antarctic Treaty, these claims are held in abeyance. This means they are put on hold.

The physical environment of the islands is defined by extreme conditions. About 90 percent of the total land area is covered by glaciers. The climate is generally cold, wet, and windy. Summers occur from December to March, while winters include the month of July. During July, average temperatures can fall to about -30°C. The seas surrounding the islands are covered in ice from late April to November. Interestingly, the highest temperature ever recorded south of 60°S occurred at the Signy Research Station. This record was set on 30 January 1982. 
Despite the harsh climate, the islands support a specific type of ecosystem called a tundra ecoregion. Because they lie in cold seas below the Antarctic Convergence, the vegetation is limited. You can find mosses, lichens, and algae growing on the land. On the islands, two species of penguins live: the chinstrap penguin and the Adélie penguin. The surrounding waters are vital for feeding seabirds and seals. The biological variety changes significantly based on water depth. In the shallow littoral zone, life is very poor, containing only small creatures like amphipods, planarians, and various algae. 
As you move into deeper waters, the marine life becomes much more complex. Starfish begin to appear once the depth reaches 2 to 3 metres. Beyond this, you will find sponges, urchins, and ascidians. At depths of 8 to 10 metres, the variety of starfish increases along with the total biomass. Below 30 metres, the ocean floor hosts vast colonies of starfish. This vertical zonation shows how life adapts to different pressures and light levels in the Southern Ocean. 
The history of the islands began with maritime discovery in the early 19th century. In 1821, two sealers discovered the islands. One was an American named Nathaniel Brown Palmer, and the other was a Briton named George Powell. They originally named the area Powell's Group. During this time, the main island was named Coronation Island to mark the coronation of King George IV. In 1823, James Weddell visited the archipelago. He gave the islands their current name, which refers to the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland. 
Scientific exploration later provided a more thorough understanding of the region. In 1903, William Speirs Bruce led an expedition on the ship *Scotia*. He performed a thorough survey and overwintered at Laurie Island. Bruce also established a meteorological station, which he later sold to the Argentine Government in 1904. This site became the Orcadas Base. Today, Orcadas is the oldest research station in the Antarctic that has been continuously staffed. This long history of presence has allowed for significant long-term data collection in the region.
Today, the islands are primarily used for scientific research rather than permanent habitation. There are no permanent human inhabitants. Instead, different nations maintain research bases. The Argentine base, Orcadas, is located on Laurie Island. It can house up to 45 people during the summer, but the average number drops to 14 during the winter. The British Antarctic Survey operates the Signy Research Station on Signy Island. This station was established in 1947. While it once operated year-round, it has only been open from November to April since the 1995–1996 season. 
Political status is a complex part of the islands' identity. Both Britain and Argentina claim sovereignty over the South Orkney Islands. Britain manages them as part of the British Antarctic Territory. Argentina claims them as part of Argentine Antarctica, a claim dating back to 1925. These competing claims are managed under the 1959 Antarctic Treaty. Under this international agreement, all sovereignty claims are held in abeyance, or put on hold. This allows the islands to be used for peaceful scientific purposes rather than political conflict. One interesting biological detail is the presence of the *Eretmoptera murphyi* midge on Signy Island. This flightless insect was accidentally introduced during a botany experiment in the 1960s and is now changing the local soil ecosystem.
