This place has a very long history. People lived here at least 7,500 years ago. They were likely nomadic hunter-gatherers. Later, the Romans built fortresses along the borders. They built sites near modern towns like Leiden and Valkenburg. After the Romans left, many different groups ruled the land. The County of Holland began to form a long time ago. In the 1600s, this area became very famous for art and science. Famous painters like Rembrandt lived here.

The province has changed many times over the years. In 1840, it was officially split into North and South Holland. This was done because the land was too large and wealthy. The weather stays mild because of the ocean. Summers are cool and winters are not too cold. It can be very windy during the winter months. Rain falls throughout the year, but the first half of the year is often drier.

South Holland is a major province located in the western part of the Netherlands. It sits along the North Sea coast and serves as a vital hub for the country. As of January 2023, the province had a population of over 3.8 million people. This makes it the most populous province in the Netherlands. It is also recognized as one of the most densely populated areas in the entire world. The province covers a total area of 2,075 square kilometers. A significant portion of this land, about 23%, is actually water.

The geography of the region is shaped by water and flat landscapes. Most of the province consists of polders, which are low-lying tracts of land reclaimed from the sea. To the west, the land meets the North Sea with sandy dunes. The Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta flows through the province and drains into the sea. This delta creates a complex network of islands in the south. Some of these islands, like Goeree-Overflakkee, are used for farming. Others, such as Rozenburg, are used for the petrochemical industry. The province is divided into urban areas and more rural spaces. The central and coastal areas are part of a large urban area called the Randstad. In contrast, the eastern part is known as the Groene Hart, or "Green Heart," which is more agricultural.

The climate in South Holland is classified as a temperate oceanic climate. This means the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean influence the weather. These large bodies of water keep the summers relatively cool and the winters mild. You might experience temperatures between 2 °C and 6 °C in the winter. In the summer, temperatures usually range from 17 °C to 20 °C. Rain occurs throughout the year, though the first six months are often drier. Because the land is so flat, wind storms can be common during the winter months. Occasionally, eastern winds can bring temporary continental conditions with warmer, drier summers.

South Holland has a history that stretches back thousands of years. Archaeological finds in Hardinxveld-Giessendam show people lived there at least 7,500 years ago. These early inhabitants were likely nomadic hunter-gatherers. Later, permanent settlements began to appear near Vlaardingen. During classical antiquity, the area was part of the Roman Province of Germania Inferior. The Roman border ran along the Old Rhine and reached the North Sea near Katwijk. The Romans built several fortresses to guard this border. These included sites near modern-day Valkenburg, Leiden, and Alphen aan den Rijn. They even built a city called Forum Hadriani near modern Voorburg, which used a formal grid plan.

After the Roman era, the region saw many different rulers. It was part of the Frisian Kingdom before being conquered by the Frankish king Dagobert I in 636. In 690, the monk Willibrord arrived near Katwijk to spread Roman Catholicism. This led to the gradual Christianization of the area. The County of Holland began to form after the Treaty of Verdun in 843. Throughout the Middle Ages, the area was mostly used for farming. However, the 16th century brought major changes. During the Eighty Years' War, the province saw famous events like the Siege of Leiden. The United Netherlands declared independence in 1581, and Holland became a dominant province.

The 17th century is known as the Dutch Golden Age. During this time, South Holland was a center for world-famous thinkers and artists. Scientists like Antoni van Leeuwenhoek and Christiaan Huygens lived here. Philosophers such as Baruch Spinoza also called this region home. It was also a period of great art, featuring painters like Rembrandt van Rijn and Johannes Vermeer. The province's political importance grew as The Hague became a major center. The Binnenhof serves as a seat for the States General.

The modern borders of the province were shaped by French rule between 1795 and 1813. During this time, the old Dutch system changed many times. In 1798, the republic was reorganized into different departments. One short-lived department was called Maasland. After the French were defeated in 1813, the borders were mostly restored. However, the idea of splitting Holland remained. In 1840, the province was officially divided into North and South Holland. This decision was made because the single province of Holland was considered too large and wealthy.

In recent history, the province has faced significant challenges and growth. The construction of the Nieuwe Waterweg in 1863 helped the Port of Rotterdam grow. It is now Europe's busiest seaport. However, the region also faced destruction during World War II. In 1940, a German bombardment destroyed the center of Rotterdam.

Later, in 1953, a massive North Sea flood struck the south of the province. This flood took the lives of 677 people in South Holland. In response, the government built the Delta Works to protect the land. This massive engineering project included the completion of the Maeslantkering in 1997.
