Human activity in this region dates back at least 50,000 years. Before European arrival, many Native American polities inhabited the land. The Cherokee and the Catawba were among the largest nations. These groups were primarily village-dwellers who relied on agriculture. They grew crops such as corn, peas, and beans. The Cherokee lived in wattle and daub houses made of wood and clay. Other tribes lived along the coast to harvest fish and oysters. They used canoes to travel through the rivers and coastal plains. Many modern place names, like Edisto Island, come from these original tribes.

European exploration began with the Spanish in the 1500s. They explored Winyah Bay and founded San Miguel de Gualdape in 1526. This was the first European settlement in the contiguous United States. Later, French Huguenots attempted to settle on Parris Island in 1562. However, the settlement lacked supplies and was eventually abandoned. The English later established the Province of Carolina. The state's name honors King Charles I of England. In 1663, King Charles II granted the land to eight Lords Proprietors. By 1712, the province split into North and South Carolina. South Carolina officially became a royal colony in 1719.

During the American Revolutionary War, South Carolina saw intense conflict. More than 200 battles and skirmishes occurred within the state. This activity made it one of the most active sites in the war. South Carolina later became the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788. The state also experienced the Civil War. It was the first state to vote for secession from the Union in 1860. After the war ended, the state was readmitted to the Union in 1868.

The economy of South Carolina has transformed through many stages. In the 1800s, the state grew through rice and cotton cultivation. This era relied heavily on the labor of enslaved Africans. In the early 20th century, the state saw progress through textile mills and factories. Following World War II, the economy began to diversify further. The civil rights movement in the mid-20th century helped end legal segregation. Today, the state's economy is supported by several modern industries. These include aerospace, automotive manufacturing, agribusiness, and tourism.

South Carolina's population is distributed across several major areas. The capital city is Columbia, which has 136,632 residents. The most populous city is Charleston, with 150,227 people. There is also a large metropolitan area known as the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Combined Statistical Area. This area had an estimated population of 1,590,636 in 2023. The state's economic strength is reflected in its GDP, which was $213.45 billion in 2019. These various cities and industries connect the state's historical roots to its modern role in the United States.
