Long ago, a great land grew.

The Songhai Empire was a very large state in Africa. It was in the Sahel region.
For a long time, the Mali Empire ruled the area. But the Songhai people took control back. A leader named Sonni Ali helped the empire grow. He took over important cities like Timbuktu and Djenné. This made the empire very rich through trade. They traded goods like gold and salt.
Later, a leader named Askia the Great took power. He was a very smart ruler. He built schools and mosques. He even liked to study the stars.
After Askia, the empire faced hard times. There were many fights for power. In 1591, an army from Morocco invaded. They wanted to control the trade routes. The Songhai lost a big fight at the Battle of Tondibi. This caused the empire to fall apart.
The Songhai Empire was a massive state in the western Sahel of Africa. It reached its peak during the 15th and 16th centuries. This empire became one of the largest in African history. It grew around the Niger River, where many different groups lived. The Sorko people made boats from cailcedrat wood to fish and move goods. The Gao people hunted animals like crocodiles and hippos. Farmers known as the Do people grew crops in the fertile river lands.
Trade was the main way the empire grew its wealth. Many groups used paths across the Sahara Desert to move goods. Traders brought salt, gold, ivory, and leather to the region. They also traded kola nuts and dates. Important cities like Timbuktu and Djenné became huge centers for this business. Timbuktu was taken in 1468, and Djenné was taken in 1475. Controlling these cities meant the Songhai could control the trade routes.
For a long time, the Mali Empire ruled this area. The Songhai people lived under Mali until the empire began to weaken. Around the 1380s, the Songhai started to rule themselves again. A leader named Sonni Ali took power in 1464. He was a strong ruler who expanded the empire's size and wealth. He conquered many new lands and made the empire larger than Mali. He also took control of the important trading cities.
After Sonni Ali, a leader named Askia the Great took over. He was a very organized ruler who changed how the empire worked. He created a professional army of full-time warriors. He also built many schools, mosques, and observatories to study the stars. Askia went on a famous trip to Mecca with 300,000 pieces of gold. He used his wealth to help people and build learning centers. He even made sure trade was fair with new weights and measures.

Eventually, the empire began to face many hard problems. There were many fights between leaders for control of the kingdom. This caused a lot of instability and chaos. In 1591, an army from Morocco decided to invade. They wanted to control the trade in gold and salt. The Moroccan army had cannons and guns to use in battle. The Songhai lost a major fight at the Battle of Tondibi. This defeat caused the great empire to collapse.
The Songhai Empire was a massive state in the western Sahel region of Africa. It flourished during the 15th and 16th centuries. At its peak, it was one of the largest empires in African history. The empire was named after the Songhai people, who were its largest ethnic group. The state grew around the Niger River, which provided water and fertile land.
Early Songhai identity formed between the 9th and 3rd centuries BCE. Different groups lived near the Niger River and shared the area. The Sorko people built boats from cailcedrat wood for fishing and transport. The Gao people hunted river animals like crocodiles and hippopotamus. The Do people were talented farmers who worked the fertile river banks. Eventually, horse-riding Songhai speakers established control over these diverse groups.
Trade was the engine that drove the empire's immense wealth. The region sat near important trans-Saharan trade routes. Traders moved goods like gold, salt, ivory, and leather across the desert. They also traded kola nuts, dates, and slaves. Songhai leaders took control of these profitable routes near the city of Gao. This control allowed the Songhai to build a very prosperous society.
For a long time, the Mali Empire controlled the Gao region. Mali conquered Gao near the end of the 13th century. However, the Mali Empire began to weaken and disintegrate after 1360. This instability allowed the Songhai to reassert their independence. Under leaders like Sunni Muhammad Dao, the Songhai began to expand. They took advantage of Mali's decline to grow their own power.
Sonni Ali ruled the empire from 1464 to 1492. He was a powerful conqueror who expanded Songhai territory significantly. He annexed the city of Timbuktu in 1468. He also conquered the town of Djenné in 1473 after a seven-year siege. Sonni Ali's empire eventually surpassed the Mali Empire in area and wealth. He focused on traditional religions, which sometimes caused tension with Islamic scholars.
Askia the Great succeeded Sonni Ali and brought new reforms. He replaced the Sonni dynasty with the Askia dynasty in 1493. Askia organized the military into a professional corps of full-time warriors. He also created a bureaucracy to manage taxes and justice. He was a devout Muslim who made a famous pilgrimage to Mecca. He carried 300,000 pieces of gold to show his empire's vast wealth.
Askia the Great also focused heavily on education and science. He built mosques and religious schools throughout the empire. He recruited scholars from Egypt and Morocco to teach at the Sankore Mosque. This helped Timbuktu become a famous center of learning. The empire even supported astronomy through the use of observatories.
Despite this greatness, the empire eventually faced internal decline. In 1528, Askia's children revolted against him. After the death of Askia Daoud in 1583, civil wars broke out. These struggles for power split the empire into feuding factions. This political chaos made the state vulnerable to outside attacks. The empire's stability was lost to constant dynastic struggles.
The end of the empire came from a Moroccan invasion. In 1591, Sultan Ahmad I al-Mansur sent an army to seize trade routes. The Moroccan force was led by Judar Pasha. They used advanced weapons like eight English cannons and arquebusiers. The Songhai military did not have these modern weapons. After the defeat at the Battle of Tondibi, the Songhai Empire collapsed.
