A sombrero is a special hat from Mexico.

A sombrero is a famous hat from Mexico.

These hats were made to help people in hot places. The wide brim shades the eyes and face from the sun. The tall crown helps keep the head cool. The hat might have a chin strap to keep it on.
In the past, these hats looked very different. In the 1800s, many hats had low crowns. Some were made in the city of Puebla. These were called Poblanos. They were often a light gray color. This color helps reflect the heat. Over time, the shape changed. By the end of the 1800s, the hats grew tall and pointy. Today, performers in charreria still wear them with pride.
The jarano hat is a famous type of headwear from Mexico.

These hats are designed to help people stay comfortable in hot weather. The extra-wide brim provides shade for the face and the eyes. A high, conical crown helps to provide insulation for the head. This shape keeps the wearer much cooler under the bright sun. Many hats use these same ideas to fight the heat. For example, the Greek petasos used a similar design long ago. Even Mongolian horsemen used wide-brimmed hats in the 13th century.
Finding the exact start of the jarano hat is a hard job. There is not much evidence from the 16th century. However, we can see drawings of horsemen in old graffiti. This graffiti was found on the walls of a convent in Tepeapulco. These drawings show horsemen wearing hats with medium-sized, flat crowns.
In the 1800s, the hat began to change quite a bit. During the early 1800s, many hats had very low crowns. Some of the most famous styles were called Poblanos. These were made in the city of Puebla. They were often a light gray color called aplomado. This color was chosen because it reflects light and heat.
By the very end of the 19th century, the hat changed again. It grew into the tall, pointy shape we recognize today. This iconic style has lasted for about 120 years. The hat is more than just a way to block the sun. It is a symbol of Mexican culture and history. It connects the workers of the past to performers today.
The jarano hat, often called a charro hat, is a distinctive type of headwear from Mexico.

During the 19th century, the jarano underwent significant changes. In the early 1800s, many charros preferred small hats with 6-inch (15 cm) flat brims. The most prized versions were the "jarano Poblano" from the city of Puebla.
