Solapur's history is marked by many different ruling dynasties. These included the Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, and Bahamanis. The name 'Solapur' likely comes from the Marathi words 'Sola' (sixteen) and 'Pura' (village). This refers to the sixteen villages that originally formed the area.

These villages, such as Aadilpur and Ranapur, have since merged into the Solapur Municipal Corporation. Ancient inscriptions suggest the town was once called 'Sonnalage' or 'Sonalipur'. One inscription found in the Solapur fort even identifies the town as Sandalpur. The British rulers later pronounced the name as Solapur.

The city holds a deep significance in India's struggle for independence. During the movement, freedom fighters in Solapur showed great bravery. On 6 April 1930, they hoisted the Indian national flag on the Municipal Council building. This was a unique event that occurred before many other places in the country. This period of struggle led to the execution of several individuals by the British Government. Because of these sacrifices, Solapur is known as "The City of Martyrs." The Municipal Council building, also called Indra Bhawan, was built by Rao Saheb Mallappa Warad.

Demographically, Solapur is a multicultural and multilingual metropolis. As of the 2011 census, the city population was 951,558. Including suburbs, the population reached 1,250,000 by 2012. The city features a tri-linguistic blend of Marathi, Kannada, and Telugu.

Marathi is the most spoken language at 42.29%, followed by Telugu at 17.03% and Kannada at 12.67%. This variety reflects the city's position near state borders. The literacy rate stands at 82.80%, and the sex ratio is 978 females per 1000 males. This diversity shapes the local culture and daily life.

Religion and local traditions are central to the identity of Solapur. The chief deity of the city is Shri Shivyogi Siddheshwar.

An annual fair called Gadda Yatra is held during the Makar Sankranti festival. This event attracts large crowds and is linked to the marriage of Lord Siddheshwar. The city also hosts the Manacha Shri Ajoba Ganpati temple, which has celebrated the Ganesh festival since 1885. This tradition may have even inspired Lokmanya Tilak to start the public Ganesh Festival in Pune. Local landmarks like Kambar Talav, also known as Sambhaji Talav, provide important community spaces.
