He was a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Science. As a child, she showed an unusual aptitude for complex ideas. At age eleven, she studied calculus notes used as wallpaper in her room. These notes belonged to her father. A physicist named Nikolai Tyrtov observed her ability to discover trigonometric functions on her own. He even referred to her as a "new Pascal."

Because women could not attend universities in Russia, Kovalevskaya had to find alternative paths. She needed written permission from a father or husband to study abroad. In 1868, she entered a fictitious marriage with Vladimir Kovalevskij. He was a student of paleontology and a radical publisher. This arrangement allowed her to move to Germany in 1869 to pursue advanced studies. In Heidelberg, she audited physics and mathematics courses. She studied under famous professors like Hermann von Helmholtz and Gustav Kirchhoff. Later, she moved to Berlin to study with Karl Weierstrass. In 1874, Kovalevskaya reached a major academic milestone. She submitted three papers to the University of Göttingen for her doctoral dissertation. These papers covered partial differential equations, elliptic integrals, and the dynamics of Saturn's rings. With Weierstrass's support, she earned her doctorate summa cum laude. She was exempted from the usual oral examinations.

Her work on partial differential equations led to the Cauchy–Kovalevskaya theorem. This theorem proves the existence and analyticity of local solutions to certain equations. This was a massive achievement for a woman in the nineteenth century.

After returning to Russia, Kovalevskaya faced professional and financial difficulties. Her husband failed to get a professorship due to his radical beliefs. The couple eventually faced bankruptcy. In 1883, she secured a position as a privat-docent at Stockholm University in Sweden. This was made possible with the help of mathematician Gösta Mittag-Leffler.

Kovalevskaya's most famous discovery involved the motion of rigid bodies. In 1888, she won the Prix Bordin from the French Academy of Science. This award recognized her work on a specific case of a heavy body rotating around a fixed point. Her research identified the "Kovalevskaya top." This was a major discovery because it was the only other case of completely integrable rigid body motion besides the Euler and Lagrange tops. Beyond her mathematical work, Kovalevskaya was a person of many interests. She was involved in the progressive political and feminist movements of her time. She wrote several non-mathematical works, including her memoir, *A Russian Childhood*. She also wrote two plays and an autobiographical novel titled *Nihilist Girl*.
