The game follows a specific structure to score runs. Two teams compete to score more runs than their opponent. A run is scored by hitting the ball and running the bases. Runners must touch first, second, and third base in succession. They must then reach home plate to complete the circuit. Each game typically lasts for seven innings. An inning has a top half and a bottom half. In the top half, the away team bats. The home team stays on the field to record outs.

There are two primary styles of play: fastpitch and slowpitch.

Fastpitch softball is very fast and competitive. It is often played at the professional and Olympic levels. In fastpitch, the pitcher uses various motions to strike out batters. These pitches include the fastball, riseball, and curveball. Slowpitch softball is commonly played for recreation. It features ten fielders instead of nine. In slowpitch, the pitcher must land the ball in a specific area.

This area is located behind home plate to standardize the strike zone.

Field dimensions and equipment vary by the type of game. The infield is often made of dirt or brick dust. It contains a diamond shape with four bases. A pitcher stands in a circle on a flat rubber plate. In fastpitch, this plate can be as close as 43 feet from home plate. In slowpitch, the distance varies by age and league. The ball is a sphere covered in leather or synthetic material. It is usually 12 inches in circumference. However, younger players use smaller balls.
