Many different people live in Sofia. It is known as a place of religious tolerance. This means different religions live close together. You can find a church, a mosque, and a synagogue near each other.

Summers are generally warm and sunny. Because of the high altitude, summers are often slightly cooler than other parts of Bulgaria. However, heat waves can still bring temperatures above 35°C. 
The history of the area spans nearly 7,000 years. Human habitation began there as early as 7000 BC. In antiquity, the city was known as Serdica. 

The name "Sofia" is quite different from its earlier Slavic names. It comes from the Saint Sofia Church. The word originates from the Greek word "sophía," meaning wisdom. 

Sofia is home to many important cultural institutions. The Boyana Church is a famous site from the Second Bulgarian Empire. It was added to the World Heritage List in 1979. 

The population of Sofia has changed greatly over time. In the late 18th century, there were about 70,000 residents. The population fell to 19,000 in 1870. It dropped even lower to 11,649 in 1878. After that, the population began to grow rapidly. Today, Sofia has about 1.28 million residents. These people live within a territory of 500 km2. This is 17.9% of Bulgaria's total population. The larger urban area hosts about 1.5 million people. This area covers 5723 km2. It includes parts of the Sofia and Pernik provinces. The metropolitan region includes 1.6 million people. This region even stretches into Serbia, including the city of Dimitrovgrad.
