Slate is a very special kind of metamorphic rock. Metamorphic means the rock has changed from its original form. It usually starts as a soft sedimentary rock like shale or volcanic ash. This original rock is made of clay or mud. Over a long time, the rock undergoes a process called low-grade regional metamorphism. This means it is squeezed by heavy pressure and heat.

How does this rock get its flat shape? It all happens because of strong compression. As the mud is squeezed, it can lose up to 50% of its volume. The tiny grains of clay rotate to lie flat. They form layers that are perpendicular to the direction of the squeeze. This creates something called slaty cleavage. Slaty cleavage is the way the rock splits into thin, smooth sheets.

The creation of slate is a step-by-step process driven by intense geological forces. It begins when mudrock or shale is subjected to strong regional compression. As the rock is squeezed, it can lose up to 50% of its original volume. During this compaction, tiny grains of platy minerals like clay rotate. They align themselves into parallel layers that are perpendicular to the direction of the squeeze. This alignment creates a property known as slaty cleavage. Slaty cleavage allows the rock to be split into smooth, flat slabs. As the process continues, clay minerals convert into chlorite and mica. Even the organic carbon in the rock can transform into graphite.

Scientists look at slate differently depending on how much detail they need. Under a microscope, the internal structure reveals a complex arrangement. The rock consists of very thin lenses of quartz and feldspar. These are called QF-domains. These domains are separated by very thin layers of mica, known as M-domains. If a rock is clearly a metamorphosed shale, it should be called a metashale. If its origin is unknown but it is rich in mica, it is called a pelite.

Slate is highly valued in the building industry for its specific physical properties. It is an excellent roofing material because it has a very low water absorption index.
