Skiathos is a small Greek island in the northwest Aegean Sea.

The island has a very interesting shape. It runs from north to southwest. The coastline is bumpy with many inlets and capes. Some parts of the land are quite rugged and rocky. The highest point is Mount Karafiltzanaka. In the southeast and southwest, the land has gentler slopes. This is where most people live and build things. The main town is Skiathos Town, located in the east. Other settlements include Kalyvia, Troullos, and Xanemos. The municipality also includes several small nearby islets.
Skiathos has a very long history. In 480 BC, a storm hit the Persian King Xerxes' fleet. The ships were damaged on the rocks near the coast. Later, the island was part of the Delian League. In 200 BC, Philip V of Macedon destroyed the original city. In 1207, the Ghisi brothers took the island. They built a small fortress called the Bourtzi to stop pirates. In the 1300s, people moved the capital to a place called Kastro. Kastro sits on a high rock above a steep cliff.
Many important things happened on the island. In 1704, monks built the Evangelistria Monastery. This place helped Greek rebels during the War of Independence. In 1807, the first flag of Greece was made there. During the 1800s, Skiathos became a center for building ships. People used the many pine trees to make them. Today, a small shipwright still builds traditional Greek boats called caiques. You can also visit the Church of Panaghia Limniá. This beautiful church was built in 1837.
It is easy to visit the island today. Many people arrive by boat from Volos or Agios Konstantinos. You can take high-speed vessels or regular ferries. Many people also fly into Skiathos International Airport. The airport is near a lagoon in the northeast. People like to watch planes land from very close up. Once on the island, you can use buses to travel. There are three main bus routes for visitors. One route goes to the popular golden beaches. Another route goes to the holy monastery.
Skiathos is a small island located in the northwest Aegean Sea.

The island is heavily wooded with various types of trees. Aleppo Pine is very common throughout the entire island. There is also a small Stone Pine forest near Koukounaries. This area features a lagoon and a popular beach. The forests are most concentrated in the northern and southwestern parts. Because of these woods, Skiathos became a major shipbuilding center in the 19th century. Builders used the abundant pine to construct vessels. This industry eventually declined as steamboats became more common. Today, a small shipwright still builds traditional Greek boats called caiques.
Skiathos has a complex history involving many different powers. During the Persian Wars in 480 BC, a storm hit the fleet of King Xerxes. The ships were badly damaged by the rocks off the coast. Later, the island became part of the Delian League. However, Philip V of Macedon destroyed the original city in 200 BC. In 1207, the Ghisi brothers captured the island. They built the Bourtzi, a Venetian-style fortress, to protect against pirates.
The island played a vital role in the Greek War of Independence. In 1704, monks built the Evangelistria Monastery. This monastery later served as a hide-out for Greek rebels. In 1807, the first flag of Greece was created and hoisted there. Military leaders like Theodoros Kolokotronis and Andreas Miaoulis met there to plan uprisings. They were sworn to this flag by the local bishop. After the war ended and piracy stopped, Kastro lost its importance. In the 1830s, the capital moved back to its original site.
Tourism is a major part of life on Skiathos today. The island features over 60 beaches, most of which are sandy. Notable beaches include Achladies, Koukounaries, and Banana Beach. The main town of Skiathos has a population of 4,883 people. Other settlements include Kalyvia, Troullos, Xanemos, and Achladias. The municipality also manages several nearby islets. These include Tsougria, Tsougriaki, Maragos, Arkos, Troulonisi, and Aspronisi. These islets sit a few kilometres off the southeast coast. They are clearly visible from the town and the beaches.
Traveling to and around the island is quite efficient. You can reach Skiathos by boat from Volos or Agios Konstantinos. Travelers use high-speed Flying Cat vessels or conventional ferries. Skiathos International Airport is located in the northeast. It sits next to a lagoon and a lowland ismus. The airport is a famous spot for plane spotters. They enjoy watching planes take off and land from a very close distance. In the summer, foreign airlines fly here from many European countries.
Once on the island, a well-organized transit system helps visitors. A main paved road runs along the southeastern stretch. There are also narrower dirt roads leading to the interior. Three main bus routes serve the island. The core route connects the main town to golden beaches like Vassilias and Agia Eleni. This route uses five coaches and can run five times an hour during peak summer. The second route travels to the Evangelistria Monastery. The third route uses mini-buses to reach Xanemos on the north coast.
