Six-Day War

Many years ago, a war broke out.

It lasted only six days.

Israel fought with many Arab lands. These lands were Egypt, Syria, and Jordan.

Tensions grew between them for a long time.

One leader in Egypt closed a sea path. This made things very tense. Then, the fighting began in June.

Israel won the fight quickly. They took over new lands. This included the Sinai and the West Bank.

Many people had to leave their homes. It was a very sad time for them. The war changed the area forever.

In June 1967, a war broke out in the Middle East.

Jordan joined the war by attacking Israeli forces to slow them down. Later, on the fifth day, Syria began shelling Israeli positions from the north. The fighting ended when Egypt and Jordan agreed to a ceasefire on June 8. Syria agreed to stop fighting on June 9. Finally, a full ceasefire was signed with Israel on June 11. By then, Israel had captured the Golan Heights, the West Bank, and the Sinai Peninsula.

The war had a very heavy cost for many people.

More than 15,000 Arab fighters and soldiers died during the conflict. Israel lost fewer than 1,000 people. Many civilians also had to leave their homes during the fighting. Between 280,000 and 325,000 Palestinians fled the West Bank. Also, about 100,000 Syrians left the Golan Heights. These changes in where people lived had long-lasting effects on the whole area.

By the sixth day, Israel had occupied the entire peninsula. At the same time, Jordan launched attacks to slow the Israeli advance.

As the fighting continued, the conflict spread to other areas. On the fifth day, Syria joined the war by shelling Israeli positions. The Syrian military had been weakened by previous internal political struggles. This made them less prepared for a major war. Israel moved to take the Golan Heights from Syria.

Eventually, the fighting slowed down. Egypt and Jordan agreed to a ceasefire on June 8. Syria agreed to a ceasefire on June 9. A final ceasefire was signed with Israel on June 11.

The human cost of the war was very high. More than 15,000 Arab fatalities occurred during the six days. Israel suffered fewer than 1,000 fatalities. There were also deaths of civilians and international personnel. For example, 20 Israeli civilians died during air strikes on Jerusalem. Additionally, 34 US personnel died during the USS Liberty incident.

The war also caused a massive displacement of people. Between 280,000 and 325,000 Palestinians fled the West Bank. About 100,000 Syrians also fled the Golan Heights.

The war resulted in Israel occupying several new territories.

These included the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan. They also occupied the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. They also took the Golan Heights from Syria. These changes had long-term effects on the region. For instance, Egypt closed the Suez Canal from 1967 until 1975. The war remains a central part of how people understand Middle Eastern politics today.
