The province experiences several seasonal winds from different directions. One of the most significant is the 120-day wind, known locally as Levar. Other winds include the Gav-kosh, the Nambi, and the Gard. These winds can carry heavy dust across the land. In August 2023, dust storms in the Sistan region were severe enough to send 1,120 people to hospitals.

The history of Sistan and Baluchestan spans thousands of years. Ancient inscriptions at Behistun and Persepolis mention Sistan as an eastern territory of Darius the Great. In 128 BC, a Central Asian tribe called the Saka took control of the area. During the Arsacid dynasty, which lasted from 248 BC to 224 AD, the province was the seat of the Suren-Pahlav Clan. The Sassanid period and the early Islamic period were times of great prosperity for the region. In 644 AD, Arab Muslims gained control during the collapse of the Persian empire. Various famous dynasties, including the Saffarids and the Safavids, have ruled this land at different times.

Demographics in the province show a rich variety of ethnic groups. The Baloch people make up the majority, representing between 70% and 76% of the population. Most Baloch people are Sunni Muslims following the Hanafi school of thought. They primarily speak the Balochi language. The Sistani Persians are the second largest group and speak a Sistani dialect of Persian. Other smaller communities include Kurds, the Brahui, and the Romani. According to the 2016 census, the total population reached 2,775,014 people living in 704,888 households.

The economy of the province relies on several different sectors. It is currently the poorest of Iran's 31 provinces, with a Human Development Index (HDI) score of 0.688. To help improve this, the government created the Chabahar Free Trade-Industrial Zone. This has encouraged new industrial investments and jobs. The region is also rich in geological minerals. Large deposits of copper, gold, silver, and iron exist here. One major site is the Chel Kooreh copper mine, located 120 km north of Zahedan. Additionally, Sistan embroidery is a famous ancient handicraft dating back to the 5th century BC.

Transportation and infrastructure connect the province to the rest of the world. The city of Zahedan has a railway connection to Quetta, Pakistan, that has existed for a century. A newer railway now connects Bam to Zahedan. The Port of Chabahar is the most important maritime hub in the south. It sits on the Makran Coast and is being supported by investments from India.

The province also relies on two main passenger airports: Zahedan Airport and Chabahar Airport. These facilities help move people and goods through the region.

Water management is a critical and complex issue for the people of Sistan and Baluchestan. Iran is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world. The province faces severe shortages due to many factors. These include the diversion of water to other regions and the construction of large dams. Such projects often prioritize industrial or urban centers over rural and minority communities. This can lead to the drying of vital ecosystems and wetlands. These environmental changes often result in more frequent dust storms and land subsidence, which make life difficult for local residents.
