One huge sinkhole in Alabama is called the December Giant. It formed in 1972 because the water level was lowered by a nearby quarry. In China, the Xiaozhai Tiankeng is one of the largest known sinkholes. Scientists have even found active pits on a comet named 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

You can think of a sinkhole like a hollow eggshell. The shell might look strong and solid on the outside. But if the inside is empty, the shell can break easily.

Most sinkholes form through karst processes. Karst refers to landscapes shaped by the chemical dissolution of carbonate rocks. This includes rocks like limestone, gypsum, or salt. As water moves through the ground, it dissolves these soluble rocks. This process creates underground spaces, joints, and large caverns. Eventually, the surface lacks enough support to stay upright. This can lead to a sudden, dramatic collapse of the land.

Scientists classify sinkholes into several distinct types based on how they form. Solution or dissolution sinkholes occur when water dissolves limestone beneath a soil covering. This process enlarges natural openings like fractures or bedding planes. As the rock dissolves, the soil settles into the new gaps. Cover-subsidence sinkholes form when voids in the limestone allow more soil to settle. This process is called piping, where granular sediments fall into secondary openings.

Finally, cover-collapse sinkholes, or "dropouts," occur when so much soil settles into voids that the surface suddenly falls. This type of collapse can be catastrophic and happens very abruptly.

While many sinkholes are natural, human activity can accelerate their formation. In urban areas, water main breaks or broken sewer pipes can wash soil away. This creates voids under roads and parking lots.

Sinkholes are found all over the world in various environments. They are very common in karst landscapes, which can look pock-marked with thousands of holes. In these areas, surface rivers often disappear into subterranean rivers. The largest known sinkholes in sandstone are Sima Humboldt and Sima Martel in Venezuela. In the United States, the U.S. Geological Survey estimated that karst-related damage costs at least $300 million per year. This figure is based on data from the 15 years preceding their study. The states with the most damage include Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. One famous example is the "December Giant" in Alabama. It formed in 1972 after humans lowered the water level in a nearby rock quarry.

Because sinkholes can be predicted, they are often preventable rather than being unpredictable disasters. Experts suggest that land-use planning in karst areas must account for the risk of collapse. In these regions, engineers cannot just check if the soil is strong. They must also perform geotechnical site investigations to look for hidden cavities. This requires taking many more soil and rock samples than usual. By identifying and avoiding the most susceptible areas, we can protect people and buildings from the ground giving way.
