Before SLRs, many cameras used two different light paths. One path went through the lens to the film. Another path went through a separate viewfinder above or to the side. This could cause errors in close-up shots. These errors are called parallax, where the view and the photo do not match perfectly.

Inside the camera, there is a very clever way it works. First, light enters through the front lens. This light hits a mirror placed at a 45-degree angle. The mirror reflects the light upward into a glass piece called a pentaprism.

A big change happened in 1943 when Jenő Dulovits patented an eye-level viewfinder in Hungary. His Duflex camera was the first to have a mirror that returns instantly. In 1948, the Italian Rectaflex A.1000 became the first commercial SLR to use a roof pentaprism.

Other big names like Nikon, Canon, and Yashica joined in 1959. Later, digital SLRs, or DSLRs, became very common. These use a digital sensor instead of film. Even though digital cameras are now very popular, many professionals still love the SLR design. They like that they can swap lenses to change how they see the world. Think of an SLR like a window that can change. In a normal camera, looking through the window is like looking through a different window nearby. In an SLR, you are looking through the exact same glass that the light uses to make the picture.

It stays closed to block light until the exact moment of exposure. Early versions used two curtains of cloth or metal that traveled horizontally. Modern cameras often use vertical shutters, which can travel a shorter distance of 24 millimeters. This design allows for faster shutter speeds and better flash synchronization.

Before the SLR became dominant, other systems had notable limitations. Twin-lens reflex (TLR) and rangefinder cameras used two separate optical light paths. One path went through the lens to the film, while another was used for viewing. Because these paths were not the same, they suffered from parallax errors. Parallax occurs when the view and the final image do not align, especially in close-up shots. Additionally, focusing a lens at wide apertures in low light was difficult with these older systems. The SLR solved these issues by sharing a single optical path for both viewing and capturing.

The history of the SLR involves many important inventors and milestones. Large format SLR cameras likely began with C.R. Smith's Monocular Duplex in 1884.
