One path went through the lens to the film, while another was used for viewing. Because these paths were not the same, they suffered from parallax errors. Parallax occurs when the view and the final image do not align, especially in close-up shots. Additionally, focusing a lens at wide apertures in low light was difficult with these older systems. The SLR solved these issues by sharing a single optical path for both viewing and capturing.
The history of the SLR involves many important inventors and milestones. Large format SLR cameras likely began with C.R. Smith's Monocular Duplex in 1884. By the 1920s, makers were launching SLRs for smaller exposure formats. Leica debuted the first mass-market 35 mm SLR in 1935 using a reflex housing. In 1936, the Kine Exakta from Germany became the first integrated 35 mm SLR on the market. 

Japanese manufacturers played a massive role in popularizing the SLR design. Asahi developed the Asahiflex in 1952 and the Asahiflex IIB in 1954. By 1957, the Asahi Pentax combined a fixed pentaprism with a right-hand thumb wind lever. 
Even in a digital age, the SLR offers specific technical advantages. While many compact digital cameras use an LCD screen for a preview, they cannot match the SLR's optical viewfinder. The clarity, shadow detail, and contrast ratio of a direct-viewed optical viewfinder are superior. SLRs also typically have less shutter lag, which allows for more precise timing of photographs. Because they use real light and glass rather than electronic screens, the view remains extremely clear. This makes the SLR a preferred choice for many high-end and professional photographers.
