His life was full of many travels and big decisions. In 1199, he joined the Fourth Crusade. This was a long journey to distant lands. While on this trip, he disagreed with other leaders. They wanted to attack the city of Zara. Simon thought this was wrong because the people there were fellow Christians. Because he did not agree, he and his followers left the group. They traveled to Hungary and then to a place called Acre.
Later, Simon led a different war called the Albigensian Crusade. This war began in 1209 in the south of France. He fought against people called Cathars who had different religious ideas. He worked with the King of France, Philip Augustus. Even though the King did not always agree with Simon, he accepted the lands Simon won. Simon also fought against Peter II of Aragon at the Battle of Muret in 1213. This was a very important victory for his side.
At the end of his life, Simon was fighting near the city of Toulouse. He tried to take the city during a long siege. This siege lasted for nine months. On June 25, 1218, Simon died during a fight with the people inside the city. A large stone from a machine called a mangonel hit him. He was buried in the Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire at Carcassonne. Simon de Montfort was a powerful French nobleman and knight. He lived during the early 13th century. He is remembered as a major military commander of the Middle Ages. He held many high titles across different countries. He was the Lord of Montfort in France. He was also the Earl of Leicester in England.
Montfort's career began with the Fourth Crusade in 1199. He joined this crusade after taking the cross at a tournament. The crusade faced many difficult decisions. For example, the group was diverted to the city of Zara. The Venetians wanted to attack Zara on the Adriatic Sea. Pope Innocent III warned the Crusaders not to attack fellow Christians. Simon strongly opposed this attack. He argued that the city should not surrender to the Venetians. Because he disagreed with the group, he and his followers left the crusade. They traveled through the court of King Emeric of Hungary to reach Acre.
In England, Montfort had a complex connection to the Earldom of Leicester. His mother, Amicia de Beaumont, had a claim to this title. She was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Leicester. After her brother died without children in 1204, the rights passed to her and Simon. However, King John of England took control of these lands in February 1207. He confiscated the revenues from the estates. In 1215, the lands were passed to Simon's cousin, Ranulph de Meschines. This shows how much control kings held over noble titles and wealth.
Later, Simon led the Albigensian Crusade starting in 1209. This was a war against the Cathars in southern France. The Cathars were a group suspected of religious dissidence. After the Siege of Carcassonne, Simon was elected as the leader of this crusade. He became the Viscount of territories taken from the Trencavel family. He also gained land from Raymond VI of Toulouse. This made him one of the most important landowners in the region of Occitania. He held many titles, including Count of Toulouse and Duke of Narbonne by 1215.
Simon was known for being a very intense and sometimes brutal leader. He was deeply committed to religious orthodoxy. He supported the Dominican order in their work to stop heresy. Some historians believe his campaigns were actually a conquest of southern lands by northern men. For example, the historian Alistair Horne suggests King Philip Augustus of France may have used Simon to expand royal power. The King disapproved of some of Simon's actions but accepted the wealth they brought to the royal treasury. This highlights the political motives behind many medieval religious wars.
His military skill was proven at the Battle of Muret in 1213. During this battle, he defeated Peter II of Aragon. This victory helped end the Albigensian movement. However, Simon continued to fight to keep his new lands. He spent years besieging different fortified places. In 1216, he spent several months besieging the town of Beaucaire. He was an energetic campaigner who moved quickly to strike his enemies. He often fought local lords who changed sides during the conflict.
At the end of his life, Simon focused on the city of Toulouse. He attempted to take the city through a long siege. This siege lasted for nine months. On June 25, 1218, Simon died during a combat encounter. A stone from a mangonel hit him. A mangonel is a large machine used to throw heavy stones.
