Scientists divide silicon dioxide into two main structural categories. Crystalline silica has a highly organized, repeating atomic pattern. This category includes minerals like quartz, tridymite, and cristobalite. High-temperature forms include tridymite and cristobalite, while high-pressure forms include coesite and stishovite.
Polymorphism allows silica to change its form based on environmental conditions. Alpha-quartz is the most stable solid form at room temperature. However, the substance undergoes a transformation to beta-quartz at 573 °C. This change in temperature causes a significant change in volume. Such shifts can cause rocks or ceramics to fracture. High-pressure environments create much denser minerals like stishovite. Stishovite has a density of 4.287 g/cm3. In comparison, alpha-quartz has a density of only 2.648 g/cm3. This density increase happens because the silicon atom changes its coordination to six oxygen atoms. 
Silicon dioxide plays a massive role in the Earth's geology and biology. Quartz alone makes up more than 10% of the Earth's crust by mass. 
Human industry relies heavily on the unique properties of silica. About 95% of commercial silica is used in the construction industry. It is a key ingredient for producing Portland cement concrete. Silica is also the primary raw material for making glass. 

Beyond heavy industry, silica is found in many everyday consumer goods. Fumed silica is a white powder with an extremely low bulk density. It is often used as an anti-caking agent in powdered foods like spices.
