These trains work using special tracks that are different from older ones. Most older tracks in Japan use a narrow gauge, which means the rails are closer together. The Shinkansen uses standard gauge, which means the rails are wider apart.

A trip between Tokyo and Osaka used to take over six hours. The Shinkansen cut that time down to just a few hours. By 1967, the line had already carried 100 million passengers.

To achieve such high speeds, the Shinkansen uses specialized infrastructure. Most conventional lines in Japan use a narrow gauge, where the rails are closer together. The Shinkansen uses standard gauge, meaning the rails are set wider apart.

This wider base allows for more stability at high speeds. The tracks are also completely grade-separated from road traffic. This means roads and trains never intersect at the same level. The routes use many tunnels and viaducts to bypass obstacles. This design allows the trains to maintain a very smooth path.

Engineers use advanced technology to keep the tracks safe and efficient. They use continuous welded rail to eliminate gaps between rail segments. This reduces the vibrations that would happen with traditional joints. They also use swingnose crossing points to smooth out turns. To manage heat, they use long rails joined by expansion joints. These joints help the metal handle thermal elongation and shrinkage. In tunnels and on viaducts, they often use slab track. Slab track consists of rails and fasteners on a concrete bed. This method is more cost-effective in tunnels because it lowers the track height.

History shows that the idea for high-speed rail began long ago. In 1940, a proposal described a standard-gauge line between Tokyo and Shimonoseki. This plan included speeds of up to 210 km/h. However, these early projects were abandoned in 1943 during World War II. After the war, the Tōkaidō Line reached its full capacity. This created a massive need for a new way to move people. In the 1950s, leaders like Shinji Sogō advocated for the project. Hideo Shima provided the technical leadership as chief engineer. They eventually secured a $80 million loan from the World Bank to help.

Some sections on the Tōhoku Shinkansen reach speeds of 320 km/h. In 2024, the entire network recorded 385.9 million passenger journeys. The Tōkaidō line remains the busiest, carrying 161 million passengers in fiscal 2023. It has carried over 6.5 billion passengers since it first opened.

Looking toward the future, engineers are developing even faster technology. They are currently building the Chūō Shinkansen, which is a maglev line. Maglev stands for magnetic levitation. This system uses magnets to move trains. In 2015, an L0 series maglev train set a world speed record of 603 km/h.

This new line will connect Tokyo and Osaka in just 67 minutes. Construction began in 2011 and is expected to open by at least 2034. This represents the next major step in high-speed rail evolution.
