History shows that the idea for high-speed rail began long ago. In 1940, a proposal described a standard-gauge line between Tokyo and Shimonoseki. This plan included speeds of up to 210 km/h. However, these early projects were abandoned in 1943 during World War II. After the war, the Tōkaidō Line reached its full capacity. This created a massive need for a new way to move people. In the 1950s, leaders like Shinji Sogō advocated for the project. Hideo Shima provided the technical leadership as chief engineer. They eventually secured a $80 million loan from the World Bank to help. 
The first Shinkansen line, the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, opened on October 1, 1964. 
The network has expanded significantly since that first successful launch. The San'yō Shinkansen was completed in 1975, extending the line westward. Other lines like the Tōhoku and Jōetsu Shinkansen were also built. Today, the network reaches most major cities on Honshu and Kyushu. It even extends to Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido. 
Looking toward the future, engineers are developing even faster technology. They are currently building the Chūō Shinkansen, which is a maglev line. Maglev stands for magnetic levitation. This system uses magnets to move trains. In 2015, an L0 series maglev train set a world speed record of 603 km/h.
