Shen Zhou was born in 1427 in Xiangcheng. This area is near the busy city of Suzhou in China. His family was very wealthy and had much land. His great-grandfather, Shen Liang-ch’en, became rich after the Mongol rule ended. Later, the Ming dynasty gave his family the job of tax collectors. This helped the family stay rich for a long time. Because of this wealth, Shen Zhou could choose his own path.

After his father, Shen Heng-chi, died, Shen Zhou made a big choice. He decided not to take the tests to become a government official. Instead, he stayed home to care for his widowed mother, Chang Su-wan. This was a way to show great respect to his family. He lived a quiet life away from the busy government. He is best known as a founder of the Wu School of painting in Suzhou. This artistic movement focused on the ideals of the inspired scholar-painter. Unlike many artists who painted for money, Shen Zhou viewed painting as a form of meditation. He believed a painting was a direct extension of the artist's own self. His work helped revive an individualistic approach to art that had flourished during the previous Yuan dynasty.

Shen Zhou's artistic process often involved a deep connection to history and literature. He was highly accomplished in the study of history and the classics. This scholarly training allowed him to master the styles of the Yuan masters. He frequently used a technique called "boneless" rendering to create his depictions of flowers. This method involves painting without using hard outlines to define shapes. He also worked closely with other literati, or scholar-officials, during social gatherings. These artists would collaborate by combining painting, poetry, and calligraphy into single works.

The Wu School style was distinct from the dominant art of the imperial court. During the early Ming dynasty, the Hongwu emperor (reigned 1368–1398) brought master painters to his court in Nanjing. He encouraged a style that conformed to the older Song masters, known as the Zhe School. This was seen as a way to limit the influence of the scholar class. However, when the Yongle emperor (reigned 1403–1424) moved the capital to Beijing, the influence of the court moved further away. This distance allowed the Wu School to rise in Suzhou as a somewhat subversive and independent movement.

Shen Zhou's personal life was shaped by his family's significant wealth and his devotion to tradition. He was born in 1427 in Xiangcheng, near the city of Suzhou in Jiangsu province. His family's prosperity began with his paternal great-grandfather, Shen Liang-ch’en. Following the end of Mongol rule, Shen Liang-ch’en became a wealthy landowner. Under the Ming dynasty's lijia system, the head of the Shen family served as a tax collector. This position steadily increased the family's wealth and allowed his descendants to live as retired scholar-artists. This financial security meant Shen Zhou did not need to rely on wealthy patrons to support his art.

After the death of his father, Shen Heng-chi, Shen Zhou made a significant decision regarding his career. He chose to forgo the official examinations required to become a government official. Instead, he dedicated his life to the care of his widowed mother, Chang Su-wan. This act was a profound demonstration of filial piety, which is the Confucian virtue of respect for one's parents. By choosing this path, he lived a reclusive life focused on painting and monastic contemplation. He spent his time studying the natural world and socializing with fellow scholars until his death in 1509.

Shen Zhou's landscapes are famous for their specific perspective on the relationship between humans and nature. He often depicted soaring mountains and towering trees to emphasize the immense scale of the earth. In these compositions, human figures are reduced to tiny, insignificant specks. This technique was intended to make nature feel all-empowering and to dwarf the human element. A notable example is his 1487 work, "Rainy Thoughts," currently held in the National Palace Museum in Taipei.

In this piece, rain dominates the scene while a small house blurs into the massive mountains. This approach contrasts sharply with the painter Wu Wei, who placed humankind at the center of his art.

Today, Shen Zhou's legacy remains a vital part of Chinese art history. His ability to combine experimental elements with the rigid styles of the Yuan masters helped create a new, eclectic revivalism. His collection of late Yuan and early Ming paintings served as essential models for his colleagues. By integrating the intellectual depth of the classics with visual mastery, he helped define the identity of the Wu School. His life and work continue to represent the ideal of the artist as a scholar and a thinker.
