Despite its benefits, shaving can cause various side effects. These include cuts, abrasions, and skin irritation.

To minimize these risks, users should use fresh blades and apply plenty of lubrication. Shaving in the direction of the hair growth is also important. Some people use alum blocks or styptic pencils to close small cuts. Others apply aftershave lotions. These lotions often contain antiseptic agents like isopropyl alcohol to prevent infection.
