During the early 1900s, the school underwent many changes in name and focus. In 1905, it became the High Industrial School under the Ministry of Commerce. By 1907, it was the Shanghai High Industrial School of the Postal Transmission Department. From 1911 to 1912, it was known as Grand Nanyang University. The mid-20th century brought significant reorganizations to the university. In 1949, the People's Liberation Army captured western Shanghai. This allowed the university to resume its operations by June 2. In 1950, the school introduced new majors like automotive engineering. In 1952, faculties were organized into three main areas. These areas were Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Shipbuilding. The university also transitioned to a five-year degree program in 1955. By 1958, the school had grown to include 15 different majors. At that time, it served approximately 5,000 students.

A major turning point occurred due to a government relocation plan. In 1955, a committee decided to follow instructions to move the school. An office was set up in Xi'an to prepare for this. By 1957, the relocation process began in earnest. However, the university decided to keep some departments in Shanghai. This led to a formal split in 1959. The departing departments became Xi'an Jiaotong University. The remaining campus in Shanghai was renamed Shanghai Jiaotong University. This separation created two distinct and important institutions.

In more recent history, the university has continued to grow through mergers. In 1999, the Shanghai Agricultural College joined the university. A very large merger happened in 2005. This combined the former Shanghai Jiao Tong University with the Shanghai Second Medical University. This merger helped create the modern version of the institution. Recently, the university has faced changes in international partnerships. In 2025, the University of Michigan ended its partnership with SJTU. This follows a trend of changing relationships between US and Chinese universities. Despite these changes, SJTU remains a global leader in many academic rankings. It excels in fields like engineering, business, and the natural sciences.
