It connected Xi'an to the west through the Wushao Ling Pass. This route eventually linked China to Parthia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Europe. During the Ming dynasty, most visitors from West Asia entered China through Shaanxi. This made the province a major center for international exchange.
In more recent history, Shaanxi played a role in the Chinese Revolution. The city of Yan'an was near the end of the Long March. The Chinese Red Army fled to this area after the Chinese Soviet Republic was destroyed. From late 1935 to early 1947, Yan'an became the birthplace of the revolution. The Communists formed the Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region here. This period changed the political landscape of modern China forever.
Today, Shaanxi is a significant economic power in China. It ranks as the 15th largest economy in the country. The province focuses on two main industries: fossil fuels and high technology. The high-technology sector is particularly advanced in aerospace. Shaanxi produces more than 50% of China's domestic commercial aviation equipment.
