The French built forts in the Ohio River Valley. They wanted to protect their claims and their Native American allies. British settlers also wanted this fertile land for new farms. In 1754, a young George Washington led a group of militia. They had a clash with French troops at Jumonville Glen. This small fight was one of the first parts of the larger war.

In Europe, the countries changed their friends in a big way. This was called the Diplomatic Revolution.

Before this, France and Austria were often enemies. But they signed the Treaty of Versailles in 1756 to become allies. At the same time, Great Britain and Prussia made a deal to help each other. This new way of making alliances caused a lot of chaos. It made a large war between these groups almost certain.

Many different leaders and places were involved in the struggle.

The Seven Years' War was a massive global conflict fought from 1756 to 1763.

It involved many great powers fighting across several continents. While much of the fighting occurred in Europe, significant battles also took place in North America and the Indian subcontinent. The war was essentially a struggle for dominance between two major coalitions. One side included Great Britain and Prussia. The opposing side was led by France and Austria. Other nations like Spain, Russia, Portugal, Sweden, and Saxony also joined the struggle. This conflict reshaped the political map of the world and changed how nations interacted.

In North America, the war began due to overlapping territorial claims.

During the 1750s, the boundaries between British and French possessions were not clearly defined. France claimed the entire Mississippi River basin. To protect this claim, the French began building a chain of forts in the Ohio River Valley. They also wanted to shield Native American populations from British influence. British settlers were unhappy with this move. They wanted access to the fertile land of the Ohio River Valley for new farms. They also feared that French troops would encourage tribal allies to attack them.

The tension in North America led to direct military clashes.

The French planned to build a major fort at "the Forks," where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet. This location is now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When peaceful British attempts to stop them failed, the French proceeded with construction. They named the site Fort Duquesne. In May 1754, a British colonial militia led by George Washington and Chief Tanacharison ambushed a French force at Jumonville Glen. This skirmish resulted in ten deaths, including the French commander Joseph Coulon de Jumonville. The French responded by attacking Washington at Fort Necessity in July 1754. This forced Washington to surrender and served as an early engagement of the wider war.

In Europe, the war was driven by a massive shift in alliances known as the Diplomatic Revolution.

Before this, France and Austria were long-standing rivals. However, the political landscape changed in 1756. Britain signed the Convention of Westminster, promising to help Prussia. This move terrified France, which had previously been an ally of Prussia. Consequently, France and Austria signed the First Treaty of Versailles in May 1756. This treaty pledged 24,000 troops to defend each other. This sudden realignment created chaos and made a large-scale war nearly inevitable. It ended the old system of European diplomacy and created new, powerful blocks of nations.

Much of the European fighting centered on the province of Silesia. Years earlier, during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Prussian King Frederick II had seized Silesia from Austria. Empress Maria Theresa of Austria wanted to recover this prosperous land. She used the time after the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748 to rebuild her military. She also sought new alliances, eventually forming a defensive pact with Russia. This meant Prussia had to fight against multiple powerful neighbors at once. The battles in this region were intense, involving famous leaders like Frederick the Great.

In 1762, Spain joined France as an ally and attempted to invade Portugal. During the conflict, Britain also captured important locations like Havana and Manila. When the war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the results were transformative. France lost its possessions in North America. Meanwhile, Great Britain established commercial dominance in India. These changes shifted the balance of power toward the British Empire. The war proved that conflicts in one part of the world could rapidly trigger battles across the entire globe.

Finally, the war concluded through several different peace treaties.

In Europe, the Treaty of Hubertusburg was signed in 1763. This treaty confirmed that Prussia would keep its occupation of Silesia. This was a major victory for Frederick II. It officially established Prussia as a great power in Europe. This new status allowed Prussia to challenge Austria for dominance within the German lands. The war changed the way European states balanced their power for many years to come. It showed how quickly alliances could shift and how deeply connected the world had become.
