The constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent-Bearer, sits right between these two halves. It looks like the man is holding the snake. This makes Serpens the only modern constellation divided into two disconnected regions. It is the 23rd largest constellation out of the 88 known ones.

Many amazing things happen within these star boundaries. In the head, the brightest star is Alpha Serpentis. This is a red giant star named Unukalhai.

Most constellations appear as a single, continuous shape in the sky. However, Serpens is the only modern constellation split into two non-contiguous parts. These two sections are Serpens Caput, which means "Serpent Head," and Serpens Cauda, which means "Serpent Tail."

The head is located to the west, while the tail is to the east. This separation occurs because the constellation Ophiuchus, the "Serpent-Bearer," lies directly between the two halves. In many artistic drawings, the body of the snake is shown passing behind Ophiuchus.

The structure of Serpens is defined by specific celestial boundaries. The head, Serpens Caput, is bounded by a 10-sided polygon. Its borders are set by Libra to the south, Virgo and Boötes to the west, and Corona Borealis to the north. To the east, it meets Ophiuchus and Hercules.

The tail, Serpens Cauda, is larger and defined by a 22-sided polygon. It is bordered by Sagittarius to the south, Scutum and Aquila to the east, and Ophiuchus to the north and west. Covering a total of 636.9 square degrees, Serpens ranks as the 23rd largest constellation. It is most visible during the summer months in the Northern Hemisphere.

Many fascinating stars reside within the Serpent's Head. The brightest star in the entire constellation is Alpha Serpentis, also known as Unukalhai.

This star is a red giant with an apparent magnitude of 2.63. It is bright enough to be seen with the naked eye even in areas with light pollution. Nearby, you can find the globular cluster Messier 5. Other notable stars include Lambda Serpentis, which is similar to our Sun, and the binary star system Psi Serpentis. The head also contains variable stars like R Serpentis and the cool red giant Tau4 Serpentis.

One of the most famous features is the Eagle Nebula, also known as IC 4703. This nebula contains the Pillars of Creation, which are three massive dust clouds.
