This growth moved the center of the empire toward the Middle East.

Selim became sultan after a difficult struggle for power. He fought against his own father, Sultan Bayezid II. In 1512, Selim led an army of 30,000 men against his father's 40,000 men.

Although he lost the first battle, he eventually took the throne. After he became sultan, he also had to fight his brother, Ahmed. This was part of a hard time for the royal family. Selim's choices changed who led the Ottoman lands for a long time.

One of Selim's biggest challenges was the Safavid Empire. The Safavid leader was a man named Shah Ismail I.

In 1514, the two leaders met at the Battle of Chaldiran. The Ottoman army had a big advantage in this fight. They used modern tools like artillery, black powder, and muskets.

Because the Safavids did not use these same tools, the Ottomans won. This victory helped the Ottomans take control of Eastern Anatolia.

Selim also fought to expand into the lands of the Mamluks. In 1516, his army met the Mamluk forces at Marj Dabiq.

The battle was very intense and changed everything for the Mamluks. After this win, Selim marched to Damascus and then toward Egypt. Between 1516 and 1517, he conquered the entire Mamluk Sultanate. This included Egypt, the Levant, Hejaz, and Tihamah. These new lands made the Ottoman Empire a leading Muslim state.

These conquests changed how the world saw the Ottoman Empire. By taking these lands, Selim became the guardian of holy pilgrimage routes. These routes led to the important cities of Mecca and Medina.

This growth shifted the empire's focus from the Balkans toward the Middle East. His conquests established the Ottoman Empire as a dominant power in the Muslim world. He became the guardian of the holy pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina.

Selim's path to the throne involved a violent struggle for power. He was born in Amasya in 1470 to Sultan Bayezid II and Gülbahar Hatun. In 1512, Selim rebelled against his father to claim the sultanate.

He led 30,000 men against his father's army of 40,000. While he lost the first battle near Tekirdag, he eventually succeeded in dethroning Bayezid II. After taking power, Selim also fought his brother, Ahmed, at the Battle of Yenişehir. To secure his rule, Selim executed his brothers and several nephews. This policy was intended to prevent the civil strife that had troubled his family before.

One major challenge during Selim's reign was the Safavid Empire. The Safavid leader, Shah Ismail I, had converted Persia to Shia Islam.

This created religious and political tension with the Sunni Ottoman Empire. In 1514, Selim attacked the Safavids to stop the spread of their influence. The two armies met at the Battle of Chaldiran.

The Ottomans won because they used modern technology like artillery and muskets. Shah Ismail's army was mobile, but they did not use these gunpowder weapons effectively. This victory allowed the Ottomans to annex Eastern Anatolia and Upper Mesopotamia.

Selim also targeted the Mamluk Sultanate to expand his reach. In 1516, the Ottoman and Mamluk armies met at the Battle of Marj Dabiq.

The Mamluk army was led by Sultan al-Ghawri. During the fight, several Mamluk leaders were killed, which caused panic. A rumor spread that the Sultan had ordered his soldiers to stay back. This confusion led to a Mamluk retreat. Selim entered Aleppo and Damascus in triumph. He was welcomed by many inhabitants who saw him as a deliverer from Mamluk rule.

Between 1516 and 1517, Selim conquered the entire Mamluk Sultanate. This included Egypt, the Levant, Hejaz, and Tihamah. These conquests were significant because they brought the holy cities of Mecca and Medina under Ottoman control. Because of this, Selim is often remembered as the first legitimate Ottoman Caliph. A Caliph is a leader of the Muslim community. While some historians say the official transfer of this title was a later invention, the shift in power was very real. The empire became a central force in Middle Eastern politics.

Selim's reign also involved internal conflicts with religious groups. The Alevi population began an open rebellion during his rule. This unrest was supported by the Qizilbash of Safavid Iran. In response, the Ottoman army carried out harsh reprisals. In central Anatolian cities like Tokat and Sivas, Selim's forces executed many Shiites. This was one of the largest massacres in Ottoman history. These actions were part of his effort to maintain control and religious unity within his borders.

By the time of his death in 1520, the Ottoman Empire was a global power.

His era marked the beginning of a period of great influence for the Ottoman state.
