Digital media often uses a different, more modern definition for tertiary colors. In this digital context, a tertiary color is an even mixture of one primary color and one secondary color. This uses a 3:1:0 proportion of the three primaries. This specific method yields the maximum saturation for a given hue. Under this modern definition, a color model contains six tertiary colors rather than three. Examples of these include red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, green-cyan, blue-cyan, and blue-magenta.

Some theorists also discuss quaternary colors, though they are rarely used in science. A quaternary color is a conceptual extension of a tertiary color. Under the traditional definition, these are even mixtures of two tertiary colors. This creates a color with contributions from all three primaries in 3-3-2 proportions. Because they contain so many different primary elements, these colors are very desaturated. Under the modern definition, a quaternary color is an even mixture of a tertiary color with either a secondary or a primary color. This modern approach can yield 12 different quaternary colors.
