Technological advances have allowed scientists to listen to many more channels at once. In the early 1980s, Paul Horowitz proposed using digital signal processing (DSP) to build better receivers. This led to the "Suitcase SETI" in 1981, which could check 131,000 narrow band channels. This project, named Sentinel, moved to the Oak Ridge Observatory in 1983. Later, Project META increased this capacity to 8.4 million channels. By 1995, the BETA project used 63 fast Fourier transform (FFT) engines and 21 computers. This allowed BETA to receive 250 million simultaneous channels. 
History shows that humans have been curious about Mars for a long time. In 1896, Nikola Tesla suggested using wireless electrical transmission to contact beings on Mars. In 1899, he thought he detected a signal from the planet. Some researchers believe he may have actually observed radio noise from Jupiter's moon, Io. In 1924, the United States even promoted a "National Radio Silence Day." For 36 hours, all radios were quiet for five minutes every hour. This was meant to allow researchers to listen for potential Martian messages. 
One of the most famous moments in SETI history occurred in 1977. A project volunteer named Jerry Ehman saw a very strong signal on a printout. He circled the data and wrote "Wow!" in the margin. This is now known as the Wow! signal. It is considered a top candidate for an artificial signal from space. However, the signal has not been detected again in later searches. 
Finding funding for these searches can be difficult. In 1978, Senator William Proxmire criticized the NASA SETI program. This led to the removal of SETI funding from the NASA budget in 1981. However, Carl Sagan helped restore the funding in 1982. In 1992, the government funded the Microwave Observing Program (MOP). This program planned to survey the sky and 800 specific stars. When MOP was canceled, the SETI Institute started Project Phoenix using private money. 
SETI remains a subject of intense debate within the scientific community. Critics argue the field is speculative or unfalsifiable because no evidence has been found. They suggest the search might be "overly hopeful." Supporters argue that SETI is a crucial way to address the Fermi paradox. This paradox asks why we have not seen evidence of aliens if they should exist. Recent work like the Galileo Project also brings more attention to these studies.
