This collapse forces air into cartilage-lined airways to prevent gas exchange. By stopping oxygen from entering the blood at depth, they reduce the risk of decompression sickness. This sickness occurs when gases like nitrogen build up in tissues and release upon surfacing. To manage their limited oxygen, sea lions use bradycardia, a process of slowing the heart rate. This conservation method allows them to switch from pulmonary oxygen to oxygen stored in the muscles.
