It first appeared in Mesopotamia during the Neo-Assyrian period between 911 and 609 BC. Later, it appeared in Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. A Greek mathematician named Archytas of Tarentum described the screw around 428 to 350 BC. By the 1st century BC, wooden screws were used in the Mediterranean. People used them in presses to make olive oil and grape juice.

Making metal screws became much easier thanks to new machines in the 1700s. Two brothers named Job and William Wyatt from the UK started a factory in 1776. By the 1780s, their workers could make 16,000 screws in a single day. Another maker, Jesse Ramsden, invented a screw-cutting lathe in 1777. Later, Henry Maudslay made these lathes very popular around 1797 and 1800.

In the United States, Hardman Philips built the first screw factory in 1821. It was located near Philipsburg on Moshannon Creek. This factory used steam and water power to help make metal screws.

Today, we see many different types of screw heads in our homes. Many years ago, screws only had simple slots or square shapes. In 1908, P. L. Robertson made the square socket drive a practical tool. In the 1930s, Henry F. Phillips made the cross-shaped Phillips-head screw popular.

Later, the development of the turret lathe in the 1840s and automatic screw machines in the 1870s reduced costs. These advancements allowed for much greater automation in machine-tool control. This made threaded fasteners much cheaper and more available for everyone.

Modern screws are defined by their various head and drive types. Many years ago, screws only used simple straight slots or square shapes. In 1908, P. L. Robertson made the internal-wrenching square socket drive practical. In 1911, the internal-wrenching hexagon drive became practical to manufacture. In the early 1930s, Henry F. Phillips popularized the Phillips-head screw.
