While we use the term "scientist" today, the role has changed significantly over thousands of years. In the past, people who studied nature were often called natural philosophers or men of science. These individuals did not always work in specialized labs like modern experts do. Instead, they were often mathematicians, physicians, or even religious leaders who sought to understand the universe. As society changed, these broad roles eventually split into the specific scientific disciplines we recognize today.

In classical antiquity, the study of nature was not a separate profession. Instead, philosophers engaged in natural philosophy to explain the world.

Thales, who lived from 624 to 545 BC, is often considered one of the first scientists. He described cosmic events as natural occurrences rather than things caused by gods. Aristotle, who lived from 384 to 322 BC, had a profound influence on science for over two thousand years. During this era, knowledge was often divided into specific categories. In the medieval university system, scholars studied the trivium, which included natural philosophy. They also studied the quadrivium, which focused on mathematics and astronomy. Knowledge of plants and animals was usually the responsibility of physicians.

As time passed, different cultures added new ways to acquire knowledge. In medieval Islam, many scholars were polymaths, meaning they were experts in many different subjects. Because there were no strictly defined scientific disciplines, these thinkers often combined science with religion. For example, the physician Avicenna was a hafiz, and the astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus was a cleric. During the Italian Renaissance, many scholars also acted as polymaths. Leonardo da Vinci made important observations in anatomy and paleontology. Galileo Galilei, often called the father of modern science, improved the telescope and the thermometer. These tools allowed for much more detailed observations of the solar system and the physical world.

The 17th and 18th centuries brought massive changes through the Scientific Revolution. Isaac Newton was a towering figure during this period. He created classical mechanics and co-invented calculus, a mathematical method used to study change.

He also conducted deep investigations into light and optics. During the Age of Enlightenment, scientists began to focus on specific physical forces. Luigi Galvani studied "animal electricity" by observing how electrical charges caused frog muscles to twitch. His colleague Alessandro Volta later questioned these findings, eventually leading to the invention of the electrical battery.

These experiments helped move science toward a more modern, evidence-based approach.

Finding a single name for these experts was a slow process. Until the 19th century, the term "scientist" was not in regular use. In 1833, the philosopher and historian William Whewell coined the term to describe Mary Somerville.

Whewell noticed that scientific study was becoming more specialized. People were becoming chemists, mathematicians, or naturalists. He felt the broad term "philosopher" no longer fit these specific experts. Although the word was not immediately popular, it became common in the United States by the late 19th century. By the 20th century, science had become a recognized profession with its own specialized community.

Modern science is divided into many distinct fields with their own experts. In the 20th century, physicists like Albert Einstein developed the general theory of relativity.
