Chemistry and alchemy also saw significant theoretical development. Alchemists worked to understand the composition of metals. They used the sulfur-mercury theory to explain how metals were made. This theory remained a standard idea until the 18th century. 
Geography and cartography expanded as trade routes grew. People traveled to places as far as China and Iceland. This encouraged the creation of more accurate maps. Abu Zayd al-Balkhi founded a specific school of cartography in Baghdad. Al-Biruni used a mountain in present-day Pakistan to measure the Earth's radius.
