It suggested that the world followed rational, predictable rules.
In medicine, Hippocrates of Kos is often called the "father of medicine." He lived around 460 to 370 BC. He used clinical observation and categorized different diseases. He also developed ideas behind humoral theory. Many medical writings from this time are part of the Hippocratic Corpus. While it is hard to know exactly what Hippocrates wrote, these texts were very influential. They shaped medical practice in the Islamic and Western worlds for over a thousand years. 
Formal institutions also helped organize these ideas. Plato founded the Academy in Athens around 427 BC. He believed that truth was found through rational argumentation. He thought material things were imperfect reflections of eternal ideas. He even suggested that astronomy be studied through abstract geometric models. His student, Aristotle, had a different view. Aristotle believed the world was knowable through our senses. He argued that directly observable things are real and that ideas exist within matter.
The legacy of classical antiquity is massive. Figures like Euclid, Archimedes, and Ptolemy made huge contributions. Their work covered mathematics, cosmology, medicine, and physics. These ideas spread through the Eastern, Islamic, and Latin worlds. This spread helped lead to the birth of modern science. Even though these thinkers often disagreed, they established important methods. They used empirical research to study plants, animals, and minerals. They also recognized the importance of using math to understand nature. 
Classical science was not just about facts, but about the process of questioning. Theophrastus made the first systematic attempt to classify minerals and rocks. Xenophanes of Colophon used fossils to suggest changes in the earth and sea. These observations show a growing interest in geology and paleontology. By debating theories and criticizing ideas, these thinkers built a foundation for knowledge. They turned the study of the world into a structured way of thinking. This transition from myth to reasoned inquiry changed human history forever.
