Scărișoara Cave is a big ice cave. It is in the Apuseni Mountains of Romania. This cave is a natural wonder. It is also called a glacier cave.
The cave formed 3,500 years ago. Back then, snow and ice covered the mountains. It is a deep and long cave. You enter through a shaft. You can use metal stairs to go down. One large room is called the Great Hall. It has a big ice cliff. This cliff looks over the Pool of Ice.

Bats also live in the cave. Scientists found a skeleton in the Big Reservation. They found it was a Rupicapra. That is a type of animal.
Scărișoara Cave is a huge ice cave in Romania. It sits in the Apuseni Mountains. This place is a natural wonder of the country. Some people call it a glacier cave. It is a very special place to see.
The cave formed about 3,500 years ago. This happened during the glaciations. During that time, snow and ice covered the mountains. The ice stayed inside the cave. This created a massive underground glacier. The ice can be very thick in some spots. It reaches a thickness of 5 meters in some areas.
People have studied this cave for a long time. Arnold Schmidl first mentioned it in 1863. He was an Austrian geographer. He made the first map of the cave. Later, Emil Racoviță explored it. He was a Romanian scientist and speleologist. He studied the cave between 1921 and 1923. He wrote about its origin in 1927.
The cave has many different rooms. You enter through a shaft using metal stairs. This leads to the Great Hall. The Great Hall has an ice cliff. This cliff looks over the Pool of Ice. There is also a room called the Church. It has over 100 ice stalagmites. These are ice shapes growing from the ground.
Life still exists in this cold place. Bats live inside the ice cave. Tiny bugs also live there. They are called Pholeuon prozerpinae glaciale. These bugs are only 2 or 3 mm long. The temperature stays near 0 °C for tourists. In summer, it is up to 1 °C. In winter, it can drop to -7 °C. Scientists even found a Rupicapra skeleton in the Big Reservation.
Scărișoara Cave is a massive ice cave located in the Apuseni Mountains. These mountains are part of the western Romanian Carpathians. The cave is a significant natural wonder in Romania. Scientists often describe it as a glacier cave. It is one of the largest ice caves in this mountain range. Because of its beauty, it is classified as a show cave. This means many people visit to see its unique features.
The cave formed approximately 3,500 years ago. This happened during the glaciations of the region. During that time, heavy snow and ice covered the mountains. This process created a massive underground glacier within the cave. The ice remains inside the cave system today. It has an estimated volume of 1,000,000 cubic meters. In certain areas, the ice is very thick. It can reach a thickness of 5 meters.
Human discovery of the cave has a long history. The Austrian geographer Arnold Schmidl first mentioned the cave in 1863. He provided the first observations of the site. He also created the very first map of the cave. Later, a Romanian scientist named Emil Racoviță explored the area. He was a specialist in speleology, which is the study of caves. Racoviță conducted his explorations between 1921 and 1923. He published his findings regarding the cave's origin in 1927.
Visitors enter the cave through a specific entrance shaft. This shaft is 15 meters in diameter and 40 meters deep. People use metal stairs to descend into the cave. This path leads directly to a large chamber called the Great Hall. The Great Hall is approximately 100 meters long and 50 meters wide. Inside this hall, an ice cliff stands nearly 30 meters tall. This cliff overlooks a body of water known as the Pool of Ice.
The cave contains several distinct rooms and passages. From the Great Hall, travelers can find the Church. This room is famous for having over 100 ice stalagmites. Stalagmites are ice formations that grow upward from the cave floor. Other named areas include the Great Reservation and the Little Reservation. There is also a passage called the Coman Gallery. Access to most of these chambers is restricted. Only scientific research is allowed in those areas through the Speological Institute of Cluj-Napoca.
Despite the freezing environment, life exists within the cave. Bats live inside the ice cave system. There are also very small insects present. These bugs are called Pholeuon prozerpinae glaciale. They are quite tiny, measuring only 2 to 3 mm in length. Scientists have also found biological remains in the cave. A Rupicapra skeleton was discovered inside the Big Reservation. This discovery adds to our understanding of the cave's history.
The temperature inside the cave remains quite cold. In the summer, temperatures can reach up to +1 °C. During the winter, the temperature can drop to -7 °C. For tourists visiting the open sections, the average temperature stays around 0 °C. These steady temperatures help preserve the massive ice structures. The cave is a vital part of the Apuseni Natural Park. It remains a key site for both tourism and scientific study in Romania.
