A delta is a landform made of sediment at the mouth of a river. The river exits Cedar Lake and flows toward Lake Winnipeg. Finally, the water enters Lake Winnipeg on its northwest shore. From there, the water eventually drains into Hudson Bay via the Nelson River.

History shows that this river has always been a busy highway for people. For a long time, First Nations groups lived along its banks. These included the Atsina, Cree, Saulteaux, Blackfoot Confederacy, Assiniboine, and Sioux. The river was a primary route for transportation during the fur trade. Early travelers used canoes and York boats to move goods. In the 1800s, larger riverboats were introduced from the Red River of the North. These boats remained important until railways arrived in the 1890s. Many important early settlements grew around the river. Examples include Fort Edmonton, Prince Albert, and Cumberland House. Cumberland House was a very important depot for the northwest route.

European explorers also documented the river many years ago. A Hudson's Bay Company map from 1760 used the name "Kish-stock-ewen." This name came from oral information provided by a First Nations man named Attickasish. Another map from 1774 showed a very accurate course of the river. French explorers like Louis de la Corne established Fort de la Corne near the river forks. In the 1730s, Louis-Joseph Gaultier de La Vérendrye was the first European to reach the forks. The river's branches were even given different names by traders. The North Saskatchewan was called "Rivière du Pas." The South Saskatchewan was known as "La Fourche des Gros Ventres."

Today, the river is a major source of hydroelectric power. Hydroelectric stations use flowing water to create electricity. In Saskatchewan, SaskPower operates two major stations. The E.B. Campbell station produces 289 MW of power. The Nipawin station produces 255 MW of power. In Manitoba, the Grand Rapids Generating Station is also used for power. There are also plans for new energy projects. The Choiceland Generating Station would provide 300 MW of baseload power. The Forks Generating Station is another proposed project. In 2019, the James Smith Cree Nation began developing a project with AECOM and Tesla Energy.

The river also supports a huge variety of aquatic life. Many different fish species live in these waters. You can find walleye, sauger, and yellow perch in the river. Other species include northern pike, lake whitefish, and mooneye. There are also goldeye, white sucker, and lake sturgeon. Some species, like trout, live in the river as well. Scientists monitor the river to protect these ecosystems. They watch for non-native species that might cause harm. For example, Prussian carp were found in the Red Deer River drainage in 2008. Managing the water helps keep all these fish species safe and healthy.
