The Sasanian Empire, officially known as Eranshahr, was a powerful Iranian empire. It lasted for over four centuries, from 224 to 651 AD. The empire was ruled by the House of Sasan. This dynasty was the second longest in ancient Iran. It followed the Arsacid dynasty of Parthia. The Sasanians wanted to restore the legacy of the older Achaemenid Empire. They sought to expand and strengthen the Iranian nation.

The empire began through the rise of Ardashir I. He was the son of a ruler named Papak. Ardashir first became a governor in a region called Darabgerd. He eventually took control of the province of Pars. In 224 AD, Ardashir fought the Parthian king, Artabanus IV. This battle took place at Hormozdgan. Ardashir won the battle and defeated the Parthian ruler. This victory ended the Parthian Empire. Ardashir then took the title shahanshah, which means "King of Kings."

After winning power, Ardashir expanded his territory quickly. He gained control over provinces like Kerman, Isfahan, and Susiana. He also moved his capital to a new city. This city was called Ardashir-Khwarrah, located near modern-day Firuzabad. The city was very safe because it sat near high mountains. It was protected by a high, circular wall. Ardashir's son, Shapur I, continued this growth. He conquered the Kushan Empire and parts of Bactria. Shapur I also led many military campaigns against the Roman Empire.

Shapur I is famous for his victories over Rome. In 243 AD, he fought the Roman army at Edessa. During this conflict, Shapur captured the Roman emperor Valerian. The emperor remained a prisoner for the rest of his life. Shapur celebrated this victory with large rock reliefs. One famous relief is at Naqsh-e Rostam.

Shapur was also a great builder. He ordered the construction of the first dam bridge in Iran. He founded several cities, including Bishapur and Nishapur. He even allowed some Christians to practice their faith freely.

The Sasanian government was very organized. They used a complex and centralized bureaucracy to rule. The empire also used Zoroastrianism to unify the people. This religion served as a legitimizing ideal for the rulers. However, religious policies changed over time. Shapur I was tolerant of many groups. Later, kings like Bahram I faced pressure from Zoroastrian priests. They were pressured to persecute followers of Manichaeism. Manichaeism was a religion that spread widely during this era.

At its highest point, the empire was massive. It controlled all of modern-day Iran and Iraq. It also held parts of the Arabian Peninsula. This included Eastern Arabia and South Arabia. The empire's culture was very influential. Sasanian art and ideas spread to Western Europe and Africa. Their influence even reached China and India. This helped shape the art of the medieval world.

The empire eventually faced a period of decline. A devastating war occurred with the Byzantine Empire. This war weakened the Sasanian state. Following the rise of Islam in Arabia, the empire faced new challenges. The early Muslim conquests began under Muhammad. These conquests continued under the Rashidun Caliphate. The Sasanian Empire finally fell in 651 AD. This marked a major religious shift for the region. However, Sasanian culture did not disappear. Sasanian art, music, and philosophy were absorbed into Islamic culture. This helped keep Iranian knowledge alive in the growing Muslim world.
