Instead, its edges are made by four moving paths of water called currents. These currents move in a big circle known as a gyre. This circle is called the North Atlantic Gyre. It keeps the sea in one place. The water here is famous for being very clear and deep blue.

This ocean area works like a giant trap for floating things. The four currents that form the circle move in a clockwise direction. The Gulf Stream forms the western edge of the sea. The North Atlantic Current forms the northern edge. On the east side, you will find the Canary Current. The southern edge is made by the North Atlantic Equatorial Current. Because these currents move in a circle, they pull things into the middle. This includes brown seaweed called Sargassum and other floating materials.

Explorers have known about this sea for a very long time. Portuguese sailors named it after the Sargassum seaweed they found there. In 1975, scientists found it might make 2.2 billion litres of oxygen every hour. This seaweed provides a home for many creatures. For example, tiny European eels are born in these floating mats. This movement keeps the sea contained within a specific area of the ocean.

The mechanism that creates this sea involves four distinct currents acting as moving walls. On the western edge, the Gulf Stream flows along the boundary. The northern edge is defined by the North Atlantic Current. To the east, the Canary Current forms the boundary. Finally, the North Atlantic Equatorial Current forms the southern edge. These currents work together to pull materials toward the center of the gyre. This process deposits marine plants and other materials into the middle of the sea. Because the currents are always moving, the exact boundaries of the sea can change. For example, the Canary Current is very variable in its path.

These mats create a floating ecosystem that supports many different species. For instance, the sargassum fish is a type of frogfish that has adapted to blend into the seaweed. Young loggerhead sea turtles also use the Sargassum as cover to hide from predators. The sea is also vital for catadromous species, which are animals that move between salt and fresh water. This includes the European eel, the American eel, and the American conger eel. The larvae of these eels hatch in the Sargasso Sea and eventually travel to Europe or North America. After they mature, they migrate back to the Sargasso Sea to spawn and lay eggs.

History shows that humans have interacted with this sea for centuries. Portuguese navigators named the region after the Sargassum seaweed found there. In 1492, Christopher Columbus recorded his encounters with the seaweed in his writings. He expressed fear that the plants might trap his ships or hide shallow waters. He also worried about the lack of wind in the area. Some scholars believe the sea was described even earlier by the Carthaginian Himilco the Navigator in the 5th century BC. However, modern scholars consider it unlikely that Himilco actually reached the Sargasso Sea. In 1609, the English vessel Sea Venture was blown to the shores of Bermuda, which sits near the western edge of the sea.

Scientific research in the Sargasso Sea has yielded significant data. The 1920–1922 Dana expeditions, led by Johannes Schmidt, helped identify the breeding sites of European eels. In 1932, William Beebe and Otis Barton conducted a famous deep-sea dive to observe animals. In the 1980s, researchers discovered Prochlorococcus, a type of microscopic life, in these waters. The sea is also a major source of oxygen for our planet. Based on 1975 measurements, the Sargasso Sea may produce 2.2 billion litres of O2 every hour. This makes the Sargassum seaweed a primary source of atmospheric oxygen.

Despite its importance, the Sargasso Sea faces serious modern threats. The same currents that collect seaweed also collect non-biodegradable plastic waste. This has resulted in the formation of the North Atlantic garbage patch. This plastic debris can absorb toxic chemicals from ocean pollution. These toxins can potentially poison marine life that eats the plastic. Human activities like over-fishing, oil drilling, and deep-sea mining also put the ecosystem at risk. Even though some bacteria have been found that consume plastic, it is unknown if they safely clean the water or spread poisons elsewhere.

To address these issues, international cooperation has begun. In 2014, the Sargasso Sea Commission was established to help protect the area. This group includes the governments of the United Kingdom, the United States, the Azores, Monaco, and Bermuda. The sea also holds a place in popular culture and literature. It is often portrayed as a mysterious place where ships become stuck in weed. Famous authors like Jules Verne and William Hope Hodgson used the sea as a setting for their stories. These works often treat the sea as a symbol of mystery or a repository of disconnected facts.
