Long ago, different groups of people lived in this land. The Chichimeca people lived in the central-west area. They were nomadic, which means they moved from place to place. They did not build large, permanent cities like other groups. Later, Spanish settlers arrived and built the first missions. There was a long conflict called the Chichimeca War. Peace was finally reached in 1589 through the work of leaders like Miguel Caldera.

Long before Spanish arrival, the land belonged to different cultural groups. The territory sat between the Mesoamerica and Aridoamerica cultural areas. The central-west region was inhabited by the Chichimeca peoples. These were various nomadic ethnicities living near the Aztec Empire. Because they were nomadic, they did not build large, permanent cities. Historians describe these groups as warlike peoples who lived in constant conflict. Spanish settlers faced great difficulty colonizing these northern territories. They struggled against attacks from the Guachichil tribes for many years. Peace was finally reached in 1589 through the efforts of Miguel Caldera and Brother Diego de la Magdalena. This event ended the Chichimeca War.
