The San Francisco Bay Area is a major geographic and economic region in California.

The landforms of the Bay Area are highly complex. This complexity resulted from millions of years of tectonic plate movements.

Human history in this region began thousands of years ago. Archaeological evidence, such as the Coyote Hills Shell Mound, dates back to 8,000–10,000 BC. The Ohlone and Miwok peoples have long-standing oral traditions of living in this area. The Ohlone lived primarily on the San Francisco Peninsula and in the East and South Bays. They were divided into groups like the Karkin, Chochenyo, Ramaytush, and Tamien. The Miwok occupied the North Bay, northern East Bay, and the Central Valley.

Political control of the region shifted several times during the 19th century. After the Spanish era, the Mexican government controlled the area from 1821 until 1848. In 1846, the Mexican–American War led to the United States seizing the territory. A pivotal moment occurred in 1848 when James W. Marshall discovered gold in nearby mountains.
Following the gold rush, the region underwent rapid urbanization and industrialization. The completion of the first transcontinental railroad connected the Bay Area to the rest of the United States. This helped establish a national marketplace for goods. By 1870, the immigrant labor used for railroad construction meant that 8% of San Francisco's population was of Asian origin. During World War II, the region became a vital military hub. The San Francisco Port of Embarkation, including Fort Mason, served as a primary departure point for American forces in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Today, the Bay Area is a massive economic engine. It has a gross domestic product exceeding $1.3 trillion.
The demographic makeup of the region is highly diverse. Roughly three-fifths of the residents are Hispanic/Latino, Asian, African/Black, or Pacific Islander. The remaining two-fifths are mostly non-Hispanic White Americans.
