At age 20, Ting returned to the United States to further his education. He arrived in 1956 with only $100. He barely spoke English when he first arrived. He attended the University of Michigan on a scholarship. His academic progress was incredibly rapid. He completed three different degrees in only six years. He earned bachelor's degrees in engineering, mathematics, and physics by 1959. He earned a Master of Science in physics in 1960. Finally, he received his Ph.D. in physics in 1962.
Ting has led many massive scientific projects throughout his career. In 1995, he proposed the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). This is a space-borne cosmic-ray detector. It is a massive undertaking that costs $2 billion. The project involves 500 scientists from 56 different institutions. These scientists come from 16 different countries. The main mission, AMS-02, was eventually mounted on the International Space Station. 
The AMS project faced many significant challenges. After the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, NASA planned to retire the Shuttle fleet. This put the mission at risk because the Shuttle was needed to carry the detector. Ting successfully lobbied the United States Congress and the public. This effort secured a dedicated Shuttle flight for the project. The AMS-02 was finally launched on May 16, 2011, via the STS-134 mission. It was installed on the International Space Station on May 19, 2011.
Ting’s research has covered many important scientific areas. He helped discover the gluon, which is the particle that transmits the nuclear force. He also discovered nuclear anti-matter, known as the anti-deuteron. His work measured the size of the electron family. He showed that the electron family has zero size, with a radius smaller than 10⁻¹⁷ cm. He also performed precision measurements of the radius of atomic nuclei. His studies of light rays and massive light rays helped verify the quark model.
Today, the results from the AMS have changed our view of the cosmos. After nine years in space, the detector has analyzed more than 160 billion cosmic rays. This research helps scientists search for dark matter and antimatter. Ting has received many prestigious honors for these contributions.
