In July 2021, the Salvadoran attorney general ordered his arrest. The charges included embezzlement, money laundering, and illicit enrichment of up to $530,000. Shortly after, the Nicaraguan government granted him and his family citizenship. In 2023, the United States Department of State sanctioned him for corruption related to his time as vice president. His life remains a complex example of how former combatants can enter and navigate democratic systems.
