It includes many trees and shrubs. Many of these plants live in cool places. These plants are often deciduous. This means their leaves fall off each year. Most members have leaves that grow in an alternate way. This means they do not grow directly across from each other.

Many leaves in this family have teeth on the edges. Some have a special kind called a salicoid tooth.

In this type of tooth, a vein enters the edge. The vein then gets wider as it nears the tip. Near the end of the vein, there are small bumps. These bumps are called setae. Sometimes these glands look like a torus. A torus is a shape like a doughnut.

Scientists have changed how they group these plants over time. In the older Cronquist system, they were in their own order called Salicales. That group only had three genera: Salix, Populus, and Chosenia. Today, the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group uses a different way. They place the family in the order Malpighiales. This new way shows they are close to the Violaceae and Passifloraceae families. This helps us understand how all living things are related.

This family is much larger than people used to think. It now contains about 1,220 different species. There are also 56 different genera within the family.
