Saint Kitts is a beautiful island located in the West Indies. It sits as part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. This country also includes the nearby island of Nevis. A shallow water channel called "The Narrows" separates the two islands. Saint Kitts is one of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. It is located southeast of Miami, Florida. The west side of the island meets the Caribbean Sea. The eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean.
The island is shaped by many volcanic peaks. There are three main groups of these peaks. The highest point is Mount Liamuiga. This is a dormant volcano, which means it is not erupting now. Its last eruption was about 1,620 years ago. The center of the island is very steep. Because of this, people do not live in the middle. Instead, most people live near the coast. A ring road travels around the edge of the island. The capital city is Basseterre, which is also the largest port.
Many different groups of people have lived on Saint Kitts. Long ago, the Archaic people moved south from Florida. Later, the Saladoid people arrived from Venezuela. Around 800 AD, the Igneri people lived there. By 1300 AD, the Kalinago people arrived and called the island "Liamuiga." This name means "fertile island." In 1493, Christopher Columbus arrived and claimed the island for Spain. Later, English and French colonies were set up in the mid-1620s. These two groups often fought for control of the land.
History on the island was often difficult. For a long time, the island grew sugar cane. This work was done by many enslaved people from Africa. Slavery was ended by law in 1834. After that, a system called apprenticeship lasted for four years. Today, people celebrate Emancipation Day on August 1st. The sugar industry lasted for 365 years. However, the government closed the sugar industry in 2005. Now, tourism is a very important way the island earns money.
There are many interesting things to see and do today. You can visit Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a very large fortress. You can also visit the Warner Park Cricket Stadium. This stadium hosted matches for the 2007 Cricket World Cup. For a fun ride, you can take the Saint Kitts Scenic Railway. This train was built between 1912 and 1926 to move sugar cane. Now, it takes tourists on a 3.5-hour tour around the island.
Saint Kitts, officially known as Saint Christopher, is an island in the West Indies. It is part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, which includes the neighboring island of Nevis. These two islands are separated by a shallow water channel called "The Narrows." Geographically, Saint Kitts is one of the Leeward Islands within the Lesser Antilles. It sits southeast of Miami, Florida. The island's western side borders the Caribbean Sea, while the eastern coast faces the Atlantic Ocean.
The island's physical landscape is defined by its volcanic origins. There are three distinct groups of volcanic peaks. The North West group is known as the Mount Misery Range. The Middle group is the Verchilds Range, which is a stratovolcano 976 meters high. This range contains a small summit crater with a lake. The South East group is the Olivees Range, which is one million years old. The highest peak is Mount Liamuiga. This is a dormant volcano, meaning it is not currently erupting. Its last eruption occurred 1,620 years ago. This event left behind the Steel Dust series of pyroclastic deposits on the western flank.
Geology shows that different parts of the island formed at different times. The Salt Dome Peninsula contains the oldest volcanic deposits. These are between 2.3 and 2.77 million years old. They consist of at least nine Pelean domes. The youngest volcanic center is Mount Liamuiga. It has a wide and deep crater. It also features two parasitic domes made of andesite. These are named Brimstone Hill and Sandy Point Hill. Brimstone Hill is unique because it has limestone on its flanks. This limestone was dragged upward during the formation of the dome 44,400 years ago.
Human history on the island involves many different groups of people. Long ago, Archaic people migrated south from Florida. They were later replaced by the Saladoid people around 100 BC. Around 800 AD, the Igneri people arrived. By 1300 AD, the Kalinago, or Carib people, settled the islands. They called the island "Liamuiga," which means "fertile island." In 1493, Christopher Columbus claimed the island for Spain. Later, English and French colonies were established in the mid-1620s. These two powers often fought for control. The island changed hands many times through treaties and military actions. This included the Siege of Brimstone Hill.
For much of its history, Saint Kitts relied on a monoculture economy. This means the economy focused almost entirely on one product. Originally, the island produced tobacco. In 1640, farmers switched to sugarcane to compete with Virginia. The labor-intensive nature of sugar cultivation led to the large-scale importation of enslaved Africans. Slavery was eventually outlawed by the British Empire in 1807. It was fully abolished by an Act of Parliament on August 1, 1834. Following this, a four-year period of forced labor called the apprenticeship system was implemented. This system was meant to protect plantation owners. Today, August 1 is celebrated as Emancipation Day. The sugar industry finally closed in 2005 after 365 years.
Today, the economy is much more diverse. Tourism is now a major source of income. In 2009, there were 587,479 arrivals, a large increase from previous years. The island also uses the Eastern Caribbean dollar. This currency has a fixed exchange rate of 2.7 to one with the U.S. dollar. Other growing sectors include manufacturing, construction, and non-sugar agriculture. The government also uses a citizenship-by-investment programme. Under this act, people can apply for citizenship by making an investment of at least US$400,000 into approved real estate.
Saint Kitts has many notable landmarks and sites. Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest fortress ever built in the Eastern Caribbean. The island also hosts the Warner Park Cricket Stadium. This venue hosted matches during the 2007 Cricket World Cup. This achievement made Saint Kitts and Nevis the smallest nation to ever host a World Cup event. For transport, there is the Saint Kitts Scenic Railway. It was built between 1912 and 1926 to move sugar cane. Now, it offers a 3.5-hour tour of the island for visitors.
