One famous group was the machairodonts. These were the true saber-toothed cats. One type was named Smilodon. People often call them saber-toothed tigers. But they are not actually tigers. Other saber-tooths were not cats at all. Some were related to marsupials.

Scientists used to think they only hunted very large animals. Now, many experts think they hunted medium-sized prey. This might have been easier to catch. Most of these animals died out when the world changed. Changes in the weather and plants caused them to go extinct.

These predators lived in different ways. The first ones were gorgonopsids. These were not yet mammals. They lived a very long time ago, around 270 to 252 million years ago. Later, other groups appeared. One group was called the Oxyaenodonta. They lived during the Eocene epoch. Another group was the Nimravidae, which were the oldest feliforms. They arrived about 42 million years ago. Finally, the machairodonts appeared. These were the true saber-toothed cats.

History shows us how these animals changed. The gorgonopsids lived during the Middle-Late Permian. They eventually disappeared due to volcanic activity in the Siberian Traps. This caused a big change in the climate. Later, the machaeroidines died out during the Eocene. This might have been due to a changing climate. The world went from warm and moist to cooler and drier. This made it hard for them to live in open forests. The nimravids also faced hard jobs. They faced competition and changing lands.

We can find many specific facts about these animals. The Smilodon is a very famous genus. Some people call them saber-toothed tigers. However, they are not actually related to tigers. The thylacosmilids were part of the Sparassodonta group. They lived until about 3 million years ago. The machairodonts split from the ancestors of modern cats around 20 million years ago. Smilodon and Homotherium were the last members of their group. They went extinct between 13,000 and 10,000 years ago. This happened during a time when many large animals died out.

A saber-tooth refers to any member of various extinct predatory groups characterized by long, curved, saber-shaped canine teeth. These maxillary canines are so prominent that they protrude from the mouth even when the jaws are closed. While many people associate this term with specific cats, saber-toothed predators actually belonged to several unrelated lineages. This phenomenon is a classic example of convergent evolution. This occurs when different species independently develop similar physical traits to solve similar environmental challenges. Beyond the teeth, these animals often shared a "saber-tooth suite" of characteristics. This included a wide gape, or the ability to open the mouth very far, and bulky forelimbs.

The first group of saber-tooths were the gorgonopsids. These were non-mammalian therapsids that lived during the Middle-Late Permian, roughly 270 to 252 million years ago. They were among the first animals in the Synapsida group to specialize with these long teeth. Most gorgonopsians had one pair of extreme upper canines. However, some species possessed two pairs of upper canines. These early predators were often subordinate to dinocephalians, except for the genus Phorcys. After the Capitanian mass extinction wiped out the dinocephalians, gorgonopsians grew in size to become top predators. They eventually disappeared during the Permian-Triassic extinction event. This was largely caused by volcanic activity in the Siberian Traps, which disrupted the global climate.

Following the gorgonopsids, the second major appearance of saber-teeth occurred in the machaeroidines. These belonged to the extinct order Oxyaenodonta. The earliest known member was Machaeroides simpsoni, which appeared in the early Eocene. The machaeroidines eventually died out during the middle Eocene. While some experts once thought they were outcompeted by nimravids, fossil evidence suggests they were declining even before those newer predators arrived. It is more likely that a changing climate caused their extinction. During the last 10 million years of the Eocene, the planet transitioned from a warm, moist tropical world to a cooler, seasonally arid one. Because oxyaenids had low mobility and preferred closed habitats, they could not adapt to the new, open, temperate forests.

The third group to develop these traits was the Nimravidae. This is an ancient family of feliforms, or cat-like carnivorans. The oldest known nimravids were found in China in the middle Eocene. By about 40 million years ago, they had reached North America. Nimravids likely diversified because the decline of oxyaenids opened up new ecological niches. One specific subfamily, the Barbourofelinae, likely evolved from Nimravinae and dispersed into Africa during the early Miocene. These predators faced challenges from large hyaenodonts and later from changing environments. As grasslands expanded, their preferred prey declined. This contributed to their extinction around 7 million years ago. Their disappearance in North America even created a "cat gap," a 7-million-year period without cat-like predators.

A fourth, unrelated group appeared in the form of the Thylacosmilidae. These were part of the Sparassodonta, an order of metatherian mammals related to modern marsupials. The earliest known fossils for this family date to approximately 21 million years ago. The last member of the family, Thylacosmilus, went extinct during the Pliocene, around 3 million years ago. While scientists once thought they were outcompeted by carnivoran mammals like Smilodon, recent evidence shows they did not live in the same time or place. Instead, environmental changes are believed to be the primary cause of their extinction.

The fifth and final group was the machairodonts, which are the "true" saber-toothed cats. Mitochondrial DNA shows that machairodonts split from the ancestors of living cats about 20 million years ago. Within this group, the genera Homotherium and Smilodon diverged about 18 million years ago. Smilodon is perhaps the most famous, often incorrectly called a "saber-toothed tiger." In reality, it belongs to the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae and is not closely related to modern tigers. Machairodonts began to decline during the late Miocene. In Africa, some experts suggest competition with hominids played a role. In Europe, the extinction of Megantereon coincided with the spread of grasslands. The last members, Homotherium and Smilodon, went extinct between 13,000 and 10,000 years ago during a wave of large animal extinctions.

Scientists have debated exactly how these predators used their specialized teeth. Older theories suggested they were specialized for hunting massive megaherbivores. However, recent studies suggest a different strategy. Research by Andersson et al. (211) found that the depth of the killing bite actually decreases as prey size increases. This suggests that saber-tooth cats were better at attacking prey within a similar size range to modern carnivores. Other studies show that most gorgonopsians had a jaw gape below 80 degrees, meaning they likely targeted smaller prey rather than giants. Some researchers, like C.K. Brain, suggest that large neck muscles, rather than just jaw strength, were essential for bringing down prey. This shows how complex the feeding mechanics of these extinct predators truly were.
