Sétif is a major city in eastern Algeria.

The city sits in the Hautes Plaines region. It is located east of Algiers and west of Constantine. It is also south of Béjaia and Jijel. The name Sétif comes from the Latin word "Sitifis." This name is drawn from the Berber word "Zdif." This word means "black lands." The name refers to the fertility of the surrounding soil.
Human history in this area began millions of years ago. The site of Aïn Boucherit contains very old stone tools. These lithic remains date between 1.9 and 2.4 million years ago. Scientists used four different methods to confirm this age. They used negative geomagnetic polarity and ESR dating. They also used biochronology and sedimentation rates.

Many empires controlled the region over many centuries. The area was part of the Phoenician Empire. It was also part of the Berber kingdom of Numidia. The Roman Empire later ruled the area. Sitifis became the capital of a province called Mauretania Sitifensis. This province was once 17,800 square miles in size.

Archaeological remains show how the city functioned in the past. The Romans built a large circus in Sitifis. Aerial photos show the curved end of this circus is still visible.

Modern history has also been shaped by the city. In 1839, France occupied the site. They found the city in ruins. Most of what remained were Roman and Byzantine ruins. The French built a Catholic Church as the first colonial building. Sétif was also the starting point for protests on 8 May 1945. These protests and the following massacre were crucial to the start of the Algerian War.
Today, Sétif is a busy and connected urban center.
