São Jorge was built by volcanoes. A line of volcanic cones runs down the middle. The highest point is Pico da Esperança. It is 1,053 meters tall. The island can be very active. In 1808, a volcano called Vulcão da Urzelina erupted. It sent out thick green clouds of gas.

The weather is mild. Winters are not too cold. Summers are warm. The center of the island is often cool. The low lands stay warmer. People grow corn and yams there. They also make a famous spicy cheese.

It is part of the Azores, which is an autonomous region of Portugal. The island sits in a group called the central group. Some people call this area "The Triangle" because it sits near Pico and Faial islands. A channel named Pico-São Jorge separates it from its neighbors. The island is 55 km long from Ponta dos Rosais to the Topo Islet. It is about 7 km wide at its widest point.

The island was built by many volcanic eruptions over a long time.

These eruptions created a line of volcanic cones along the central ridge. These cones reach about 700 meters high. The highest point on the island is Pico da Esperança at 1,053 meters. The land is made of different volcanic materials. Some parts, like the Topo Volcanic Complex, are about 600,000 years old. The island is also known for its tall cliffs. Some cliffs in the northeast are between 300 and 400 meters high.

People began to live on the island a long time ago.

Historians think the Azores were populated after 1430. Settlers from northern Europe arrived around 1460. A man named Willem van der Haegen moved to Topo in 1480. He founded a local community there. The island has faced many hard times through history. There were earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in 1580, 1757, 1808, and 1899. In 1808, the Urzelina eruption sent out thick green clouds of gas. This eruption caused many homes and farms to be destroyed.

Because the cliffs are so steep, people live in special places.

These flat areas near the coast are called fajãs. Most of the 8,381 people live on these geological debris fields. Many towns grew around safe ports for boats. Velas and Calheta are two important municipalities on the island.

In the past, it was hard to travel between villages by land. People often had to use the sea to stay connected. This made the coastal towns very important for trade.

Today, the island is known for many things.

One famous thing is the spicy São Jorge cheese. People also grow corn, yams, and oranges. The island has a humid subtropical climate. This means the winters are mild and the summers are warm. The hills in the center stay cooler than the coast. In 1982, an airport opened to help people visit. Now, the island is also known for fishing and animal farming. Even with its history of volcanoes, it remains a beautiful place to explore.

São Jorge is a long, slender island located in the central group of the Azores archipelago. This archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal, situated in the mid-North Atlantic Ocean. The island is part of a sub-group of islands often called the "Triangle," or the Triângulo. This name comes from its proximity to the neighboring islands of Pico and Faial. A body of water known as the Pico-São Jorge Channel separates São Jorge from these neighbors.

The physical shape of São Jorge is quite unique among the Azores. It is 55 km long, stretching from Ponta dos Rosais to the Topo Islet. At its widest point, between Fajã das Pontas and Portinho da Calheta, it is only about 7 km wide. The island's landscape is defined by its dramatic relief and high cliffs. The northern coast is characterized by sharp cliffs, while the southern coast is less inclined. In the northeast, cliffs reach heights of 300 to 400 meters with steep slopes.

Geologically, the island was formed through fissural volcanism. This process is linked to the plate tectonics of the mid-Atlantic Ridge and the São Jorge Fault. Successive eruptions built the island using different volcanic materials. The Topo Volcanic Complex is one such structure, made of basalt, hawaiite, and mugearite lavas. This complex is approximately 600,000 years old. Other parts include the Rosais Volcanic Complex and the more recent Manadas Volcanic Complex. The Manadas area features Strombolian cones and Surtseyan cones, which are formed by explosive volcanic activity.

Volcanic activity has shaped both the land and the history of the people. The highest point on the island is Pico da Esperança, reaching 1,053 meters. A central ridge contains a line of volcanic cones that stand about 700 meters high.

The island has experienced several natural catastrophes, including earthquakes and eruptions in 1580, 1757, 1808, and 1899. One famous event was the Urzelina eruption on May 1, 1808. This eruption released thick greenish clouds of chloric and sulfuric acids. These gases and heavy tremors caused widespread destruction to homes and farmland. The last terrestrial volcanic eruption occurred in 1808.

Human settlement on the island was heavily influenced by this rugged geography. Because of the high cliffs and rough central plateaus, people concentrated in specific areas. They settled on fajãs, which are geological debris fields located along the coasts. These fajãs can be composed of lava deltas or dendritic formations.

Historically, the interior was difficult to travel through, so communities were often isolated. This forced villages to rely on sea connections and coastal ports. Towns like Velas, Calheta, and Topo grew because they offered secure, sheltered ports for trade.

History shows that the island has faced many challenges from both nature and people. After the Spanish occupation in 1583, the island entered a period of isolation and economic hardship. It also faced attacks from Atlantic pirates and privateers. In 1589 and 1590, English and French raiders attacked the island. Later, in 1708, French pirates under René Duguay-Trouin attacked the town of Velas. A local leader, Sergeant-major Amaro Soares de Sousa, led a resistance at Banquetas to protect other villages.

Despite these struggles, the population grew, reaching about 3,000 inhabitants by the mid-17th century.

Today, São Jorge has a diverse economy and a humid subtropical climate. The climate is influenced by the Gulf Stream, resulting in mild winters and warm summers. While the center is cooler due to the elevation, the fajãs are warmer. The island is famous for its spicy São Jorge cheese.

Other economic activities include animal husbandry, fisheries, and the production of corn, yams, and oranges. The inauguration of the airport on April 23, 1982, helped increase commercial ventures. This modern connectivity has helped the island move past its long history of isolation.
