Long ago, many different people lived on this land. People from other continents arrived at least 10,000 BC. Later, the Tupi people lived here, including the Tupinambás tribe. They lived on places like the island of Itaóca. In the 1500s, there was a big fight called the Confederation of Tamoios. This was a revolt where many tribes joined with French explorers. They fought against the Portuguese settlers who were arriving in the area.

In 1579, a man named Gonçalo Gonçalves received land near the Imboaçu River. He built a small chapel for a saint named São Gonçalo de Amarante. This helped start the village we know today. Later, Jesuit priests arrived and started a farm in a place called Colubandê. By the 1600s, the area was becoming a parish. In the 1800s, there were many sugar mills and ports. These ports helped send sugar and other goods to the coast.

During the 1900s, São Gonçalo became a very busy place for making things. It had so many factories that people called it "Manchester Fluminense."

The municipality also contains natural protected areas. These include 4% of the Guanabara Ecological Station. It also contains part of the Central Rio de Janeiro Atlantic Forest Mosaic. Both areas were created in 2006 to protect the local environment.

The climate in São Gonçalo is both tropical and subtropical. It features rainy summers and relatively dry winters. During the summer, the air is hot and humid. Average temperatures are around 28 °C. However, peaks can reach between 38 and 40 °C. In the winter, days are sunnier and temperatures are milder. The average daytime temperature is 21 °C, while nights average 15 °C. Sometimes, the Atlantic Polar Mass can bring temperatures below 18 °C. In the early morning, minimum temperatures can drop close to 10 °C.

Human history in the region dates back to at least 10,000 BC. Around the year 1000, the Tapuia people lived in the area. They were later expelled by the Tupi people arriving from the Amazon. By the 16th century, the Tupinambás tribe inhabited the region. Archaeological remains suggest they lived on the island of Itaóca. In the 1500s, the Confederation of Tamoios revolt occurred. This was a conflict involving the Tupinambás, Tupiniquins, Aimorés, and Temiminós tribes. They joined French explorers to fight against Portuguese colonizers. The revolt ended as Portuguese colonization strengthened through attacks on indigenous villages. By 1567, the Tupinambás were largely driven away toward Cabo Frio.

The formal settlement of the modern town began in 1579. A nobleman named Gonçalo Gonçalves received land near the Imboaçu River. He was tasked with building a chapel and a village. He dedicated the chapel to São Gonçalo de Amarante. In the 17th century, Jesuit priests led further European settlement. They established a farm in Colubandê, which remains a tourist attraction today. By 1644, the area was officially a parish. In 1660 and 1661, the Cachaça Revolt took place. Farmers from São Gonçalo and Niterói rebelled against taxes on cachaça production. They marched to Rio de Janeiro and deposed the governor.

Industrialization transformed the municipality during the 20th century. In the 1940s and 1950s, large factories were installed across the region. This industrial growth was so significant that it earned the nickname "Manchester Fluminense." Several major industries emerged during this era. The Companhia Vidreira do Brasil became a massive producer of flat glass. It was the first of its kind in Brazil and the largest in South America. The Coqueiro brand became famous for its fish canning. This company was later purchased by Quaker Oats in 1973. Other notable companies included the Hime Group and the manufacturer of cement products.

Today, São Gonçalo is a highly populated urban center. According to the 2022 census, the population is 896,744 inhabitants. This makes it the second most populous municipality in Rio de Janeiro state. It is also the 18th most populous municipality in all of Brazil. The population is diverse and multiethnic. About 45.9% of the residents are multiethnic, while 36.9% are white. The city is divided into five districts: São Gonçalo, Ipiíba, Monjolos, Neves, and Sete Pontes. These districts contain 110 different neighborhoods. The city also serves as an educational hub, housing the large Rio de Janeiro State Teachers Training College.
